The heat wave pushed deaths past 700 by Tuesday night with rates of about ten daily. By 2 p.m. CST the tally stood at 655 across 22 states, rising to 719 by 8 p.m., with Missouri and Illinois bearing half the fatalities. Chicago recorded a record 104.8 degrees.

Millard Hickman, 45, marine engineer and Ogden, Utah resident, is acquitted of the last slaying of Louise Jeppesen. Jury deliberated under four hours, Beachey announced not guilty. Hickman showed emotion then left with attorney Edwin McKenzie.

In Harris County near Houston, E. H. Stuart confessed to killing his four year old daughter Dortha to secure life insurance for support of his remaining child. Blue eyed and flaxen haired Dortha was found dead on Cypress street after police say he first claimed she was kidnapped or had wandered from his parked car. He confessed after hours of denial.
Indianapolis July 24 Ralph Alsman, long mistaken for John Dillinger, recalls 17 arrests and two gunshot incidents during the outlaw era. He now says he has signed to star as the lead in a motion picture about Dillinger's life.
School district No. 1 trustees vote to add 3925 dollars to both elementary and high school budgets to cover janitress pay raises, a transfer fund, pupil transportation, and reserve funds. They seek 540 dollars more for high school swimming classes and consider reopening Lincoln school with a possible 12000 dollar rise.

A hurricane warnings cover Port O'Connor to Brownsville as strong winds and high tides strike the Texas coast. The center is at hurricane intensity and is expected to reach the Rio Grande mouth near noon tomorrow, with tides beating against sea walls in Port Arthur and Galveston.
Police said Mrs. Anna Sage known as the woman in red admitted aiding John Dillinger and identified Mrs. Rita Keele, Gary divorcee known as Polly Hamilton, as the other woman with them the night Dillinger was slain. Detained waitress Maxine Dunn said Hamilton had been seen with a man resembling Dillinger and entered the North Side restaurant late Sunday seeking information.
Hamilton July 24 A bolt of lightning instantly killed Henry Melton 31 while unloading hay on his Woodeside farm. A horse hitched to the hayrack was killed and Melton's father was knocked down. He is survived by his widow five children and a brother Robert.
A crowd of over 300 attended a dedication ceremony for a monument to World War I veteran Philip J. Kennedy. The monument, placed at the spot where Kennedy’s body was found, was built by Dave D Johnston of Silver Bow Post No. 1 American Legion at the request of his mother Mrs. Mary E Kennedy of Los Angeles. The event featured a bugler salute, prayers led by Henrietta Vineyard, and a dedicatory address by Legion Commander B N Genzberger, ending with a poem by Mrs. Kennedy.
