Tempers in South Treviso Hit by Ten Minute Hurricane

Temblors in South Treviso Italy July 25 reports say a hurricane struck Thursday killing at least 20 and injuring hundreds. Debris filled Montello Montebelluna zones with hundreds of buildings destroyed mostly farmhouses. Three hundred houses collapsed in Santa Eurasia hamlet as Brusa San Gaetano Caonada Venegazzo Volpago Sella Nervesa felt the storm path. The blast lasted ten minutes crossing about 1 1/2 miles by 2 1/2. The Montella area saw WWII battle memories before the earth quake.

Butte Golf Club Dominates State Tourney Officials Elected

Butte Country club secured the 1931 state golf tournament and C. L. Berrien of Butte was named president of the Montana State Golf association at a directors meeting. Berrien, Asst general manager for Anaconda Copper, has long been active in golf. Widespread hosting history notes the club’s role since the association’s founding and recalls the 1928 city event. The longtime secretary, L. Matter, was named honorary secretary.

Flight from Portland to New York crashes near Butte

Major Gilbert H. Eckerson survived after a crash 48 miles southeast of Butte during a one stop flight from Portland to New York. Breese Aircraft officials Lynch Rathert and Ewers rushed to the scene to aid and investigate, visiting Eckerson at Murray hospital.

The interstate commerce commission hearing on freight rates for non-ferrous ores and metals concluded in Butte. Commissioners and attorneys will reconvene in Denver on July 29 for the final mining section hearing of the Hoch-Smith rate investigation. Idaho miners testified about industry hardships, noting $52,831,887 spent 1923 to 1928 on non dividend paying claims.

Millionaire Hobo James How Laid To Rest At Taft Church

Washington July 24 James Eads How known as the millionaire hobo who befriended and aided tramps died in Staunton Virginia at 56. At All Souls Unitarian church mourners including six pallbearers and few relatives attended a simple service. A lone rose marked the casket while an International Brotherhood Welfare member handed out copies of Hobo News. The body was cremated and ashes to be sent to St Louis. How left an estate over 500000.

Missionaries Flee Interior China Amid Banditry

Foreign mission aries retreat from interior China as banditry and outlawry surge. Forty four missionaries stranded in the upper Min river valley near Shaowu and Yenping Fukien were moved to safety at Foochow with American and British officials. Capt. J. A. Macready, once altitude record holder, will greet Felix "Chief" Steinle at the Butte airport this morning. Macready, an early war era aviator and now operations manager for National Parks Airways, taught Steinle 13 years ago, and Steinle has since become a leading U.S. aviator.

Ten Flyers Sworn In As Members Of Air Police Force

Ten Southern California aviators were officially sworn into the Los Angeles police aeronautical department today. An elaborate ceremony inaugurated the emergency air branch. Roller coaster plunge at Krug park kills two in Omaha

At Krug park a coaster left its tracks and dropped 35 feet. Ruth Farrell, 14, and C H Stout, 50, died. Twenty four injured, three probably fatally. Eyewitnesses said cars jumped rails as track gave way. Women leapt from cars. many treated at hospitals.

Grammars Flaws Used to Question Whalen Papers

New York July 24 A slight grammatical error cited as evidence of fraud in the Whalen documents allegedly show Soviet directed Communist activity in the United States via Amtorg Trading Corporation. Amtorg attorney Joseph Michael told a congressional committee that a May letter to Grigory Grafpen misspelled the word present under new Russian grammar prompting questions.

Butte Delegation Heads to Montana Association Meet

A Butte delegation led by Willard Thompson temporary secretary to the Montana association will depart for Helena to attend a two day meeting. The conference aims to adopt a definite form of organization and an activities program for the association. The meeting was called by F B Connelly of Billings who heads the temporary organization, following a Montana Development congress earlier funded by A H Stafford.
