Man pleads innocent in tax case

John S. Stephan of Butte pleaded innocent before U S District Judge W D Murray to two counts alleging incorrect filing of gross income tax returns. Stephan waived trial by jury referral and a trial date was set for October. Government says 1964 income was 7069.28 versus 12794.78 and 1965 return showed 103.61.

County population and job gains lag state trends

Projections from a Maryland computer project Silver Bow County population rising 9 percent from 46,454 in 1960 to 50,934 in 1975 and employment up about 9 percent to 18,321. Montana overall sees faster growth, with farmworker declines and gains in food products, printing, machinery, and services across 12 counties.

House blocks state licensing of gun owners

The House rejected a proposal to require state licensing for gun owners by a nonrecord vote of 179 to 8 as debate continued on an administration bill to ban interstate mail order sales of rifles shotguns and ammunition. An amendment narrowly limiting the ban to pistol ammunition passed 77 to 0 and the bill faced many more changes before final action. The Senate Judiciary Committee also planned to vote Wednesday on stalled gun control legislation.

Montana Board Hikes Welfare Budget to 49.9 Million

Montana's Board of Public Welfare proposes a 49.9 million all funds budget for 1969 71 up 10.1 million from the current biennium. Of the total 28.2 million would be federal 13.7 million general fund and about 8 million from counties. The increase funds aid to dependent children boosting the average monthly payment from 37.10 to 45 with a 10 percent COLA and an ADC earned income exemption.

Missoulian killed in car bus crash west of Butte

A 39 year old Missoula man died Tuesday night when his car collided with an Interstate Mountain bus four miles west of Butte on Highway 10 near Nissler Junction. The bus driver sustained a minor head bump and five Anaconda Job Corps workers were uninjured. The victim died of multiple head injuries and was transported to Richards Funeral Home.

J J Burke Butte Leader Dies After Long Service

John J. Burke Sr. 77 former chairman of First Metals Bank and Trust Co. and president of Pacific Northwest Power Co. died Tuesday in a local hospital. Funeral set for Friday at 9 a.m. with Requiem Mass at 9:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery. Burke, born June 30, 1891 in Butte, held multiple banking and civic roles including Montana Bankers Association president 1955-56 and chair of the Pacific Coast Banking School. He served in World War I and worked in banking and credit before rising to bank presidency. active in Navy, hospital, cancer society, Boy Scouts, and Chamber committees.

Air general shot down as Viet Cong attack near Saigon

U S 9th Division infantrymen halted a Viet Cong battalion pressing toward Saigon from the Mekong Delta. Maj Gen Robert F Worley deputy commander of the 7th Air Force was killed in actions. About 115 Viet Cong engaged, 23 killed, four U S dead and seven wounded. The action followed increased shelling around the country.

Hijacked Israeli plane lands in Algeria after hijack

An El Al Boeing 707 seized en route from Rome to Tel Aviv landed in Algiers. Twenty non Israelis were released in Paris later. The hijackers remained aboard with the Israeli crew and 15 passengers. Prime Minister Eshkol condemned the act as highway robbery.
