In Monday’s special election for Butte, the garbage assessment of 7.50 per dwelling unit and a 1,000,000 federal housing project were both defeated. Taxpayer ballots total 4,265 of 11,177 eligible taxpayers. housing drew 4,543 votes from 16,026 eligible voters.
Floyd Wilson, a 41 year old convicted murderer serving life, is missing from his Alcatraz cell. He was last seen at 3 45 p m on the island. Wilson was convicted of killing Milton Lowe in Washington on Feb 8 1947 and later commuted to life by President Truman.
Haynes Sapp, 35, of 920 Utah, was struck by a car while crossing at Utah and Third about 10 15 Monday night. He suffered a possible left leg fracture and multiple cuts and bruises. he was admitted to Butte Community Memorial Hospital for X rays and observation. The juvenile driver, who could not stop in time, was released to his parents after questioning.
India rushed aid Monday to the earthquake stricken Kutch peninsula where 109 persons were listed as dead and 800 more were missing. Three hundred Indians moved into the devastated Anjar town as soldiers set up temporary shelters for the homeless.
At Parris Island the court martial heard Pfc Gerald Langone testify that Sgt McKeon slapped him lightly before leading Platoon 71 on the Ribbon Creek march in which six recruits drowned. Langone and another former recruit defended him as a strict trainer and said the slaps caused no pain.
Forty eight city employees across water, garbage, park, cemetery and sewage departments did not report to work or declined to work after arriving at 8 a.m. Monday. Officials cited a tentative 1956-57 budget with no raises. The city plans to offer rehire at current pay with seniority if employees apply by noon Tuesday.
Butte recorded a 90 degree high at the airport and 92 was forecast for today as Montana towns mark a warm spell. Whitehall led with 99, Livingston 96, Dillon 94 while Glasgow Drummond posted the coolest reading at 43 Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Gallagher, 50, a North Side beauty shop worker, was found near a folding chair and a torn blouse. police seek the attacker as Lt. Martin Joyce leads the investigation.
Washington announced the completion of its 1953 Pacific atomic tests, calling them successful and beneficial to national security. Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Lewis Strauss and Secretary of Defense Wilson said the final shot was fired and noted advances in defense methods and potential hydrogen warhead use for anti air missiles with reduced fallout.
Harold E. Stassen suggested Massachusetts Governor Christian A. Herter as vice president nominee in place of Richard Nixon. The White House quickly disavowed the idea and Stassen said he has no plan to resign his disarmament post. He cited Eisenhower's illness and polls showing Nixon weaker as factors. President Eisenhower had indicated he could not make such a statement as an official family member. Stassen said he will report to work as usual.
Elizabeth McCarthy a longtime Democratic leader in Butte died at home after a prolonged illness. A presidential elector and precinct committeewoman for 35 years, she was active in church and community affairs and spent part of her youth in Ireland with her family.
A campfire abandoned by campers sparked a three acre timber fire in Sunshine Gulch near Thompson Park, 10 miles southeast of Butte. Nine firefighters and city workers fought the blaze for about four hours before containment, with guards kept overnight for mop up. An investigation to locate the campers was announced.
