Two hundred nineteen entries, 173 players and 46 complimentary, were filed Wednesday night for the Montana State Golf Association’s 35th annual men’s championship. The event opens today with competition across multiple divisions.
The 1952 Montana women’s state golf championship nears its conclusion at Butte Country Club as quarter finals produce semifinalists Lee, Case, Hibbard and Bogan. Lee and Hibbard were medalists with 18 hole scores shared by Lee and Hibbard, who defeated Tank and Sarsfield respectively. Semifinals Saturday pairings place Lee against Case and Hibbard against Bogan, with finals Sunday.
The Democratic platform calls for peace with honor prosperity and progress with a 6000 word pledge to continue Truman era programs. The civil rights plank shows northern southern compromise with neither side fully satisfied and adopted by voice vote amid scattered noes. The platform was shaped by Rep. John W McCormack and presented after an eight hour platform committee session.
MUNSAN Korea Thursday July 24 Allied and Communist truce negotiators met in secret for 26 minutes with no progress indicated in Korean armistice talks. They agreed to reconvene Friday in Panmunjom. UN spokesman Lt Col Joseph Borchert declined to comment on proceedings. Delegates appear to be markings time awaiting new instructions as Peiping warns on prospects. The sole barrier remains prisoners repatriation with Communists pushing for all to go home.
Lima, July 23. Russell Hook of Lima was killed in Korea on July 4. He was inducted into the Army from Lima on September 19, 1950 and was employed at Del. (text incomplete)
Columbia Gardens playgrounds get new slides and baby swings ahead of Children’s Day announced by Superintendent Ted Beech. A previous group installed swings and a merry-go-round nicknamed The Flying Saucer, now rivaling Cowboy Swings in popularity. Infants can be secured in the new baby swings. Anaconda Copper Mining Co offers free rides for under 14 to the mountainside recreation area Thursday, with buses departing Park and Main at 9 am and then every 20 minutes.
President Truman summoned CIO President Philip Murray and U S Steel head Benjamin Fairless to a White House session aimed at ending the 52 day steel strike. Defense Mobilizer John R. Steelman to attend as talks potentially touch on use of the draft act to seize key plants. Unemployment nears two million and four billion dollars in losses cited as defense and economy strain.
E A Gene King Livingston hotel operator was named Montana department commander of the American Legion at the 34th convention in Billings. Delegates voted twice before a majority was reached, with Perrigo and Dawley withdrawing on the second ballot. Mrs. Harry Koch became department auxiliary president as Great Falls was chosen for the 1953 convention.
Cairo reports Gen. Mohammed Naguib seized control of the army in a swift coup, proclaimed himself army commander in chief, and surrounded government buildings with tanks. Premier Hilaly Pasha and his cabinet resigned. Aly Maher Pasha seen as likely premier. King Farouk and Haidar Pasha among those detained or displaced as Naguib asserts control and vows to fight corruption.
Lee Metcalf held the Democratic congressional nomination lead in the western district after official canvass results from Silver Bow county showed Cannon 6 829 votes to Metcalf 3 753. The canvass confirmed a 55 vote margin and noted a prior 100 vote error in Butte precinct 53 that briefly put Metcalf ahead. Official tabulations of other races will follow.

Allied air forces mounted coordinated strikes on North Korean ports and power plants near Wonsan and Yangdok, using Navy jets from Bon Homme Richard and Princeton along with Fifth Air Force raiders. Rail yards and depots southwest of Sariwon were hit as the campaign widens.
New York landlord Max Berman faced a higher penalty after a heat wave exposed his failure to provide adequate heat. He had paid a $5 fine last winter for underheating a tenant, Mrs. Ray Finkelstein. This week a Coney Island magistrate's court assessed a $25 fine for the ongoing radiator issue.
A 14 year old boy, Richard Atyeh, suffered third degree burns on his right leg when an explosion occurred while he mopped a floor at Park and Excelsior street service station in Butte. He was taken to St James hospital by passerby Walt Frazer. Earlier, at Nissler junction Henry's gas station fire destroyed three pumps and paint supply after a car rolled on a slant.
Leonard S. Kasper 36 of Billings faces a manslaughter charge after an investigation into a July 8 crash near Malta. Two men died when his car left U S Highway 2 and hit a ditch. Victims were Andrew Ebaugh 60 of Malta and Arthur Subera 28 of Billings. Coroner's jury blamed excessive speed. Kasper to be arraigned July 28 in district court.
Judge Albert H Angstman of the State Supreme Court reported that his nephew Bernard Angstman 33 is missing in action in Korea. Bernard a bombardier served in Japan in World War II and sent a letter from Okinawa yesterday. His wife Kay lives in Livingston and his father is Forrest Angstman of Clancy.
A small group bearing draft Truman signs marched quietly around the Democratic convention headquarters hotel in Chicago, the Hilton, then dispersed without incident as the convention convened.
At convention in Chicago July 23 Alben Barkley rallied Democratic factions to unite for victory over the GOP. Stevenson of Illinois led the race idea though still denying he would run. President Truman kept hands off as Dixie delegates, initially ready to bolt over loyalty vows, began praising Barkley after Sam Rayburn signaled a shift.
Alben W. Barkley addressed Democratic convention delegates in a 24 minute rally. He urged sharing the truth with the American people to win in 1952, insisting he spoke as an American first and a Democrat second. The crowd cheered, banners proclaimed Barkley for president, before he noted he had stepped out of the presidential race.
Speaker Sam Rayburn assailed Dwight D. Eisenhower, calling him a front for forces seeking to preserve the old Republican order. He accused GOP leaders of promising change while wanting power and urged distrust of such promises. He warned Americans would not trade prosperity for uncertainty as he delivered a lengthy speech at the Democratic convention.
CHICAGO July 23 The big moments at the Democratic national convention will come Thursday night with presidential nominating ballots and demonstrations. President Truman will introduce the nominee Friday night after a running mate is chosen. Plans are tentative for Thursday start at 10 am MST and the invocation remains uncertain as many candidates remain in the race.
The sixth session of the 31st Democratic national convention adjourned at 1 03 a m EST Thursday until 11 a m EST.
Rayburn defended rights of all delegates claiming they deserve respectful treatment as Byrd warned he would walk out if denied a vote. In the Conrad Hilton headquarters platform committee completed a 1952 party platform with a civil rights plank aimed at securing broad northern and southern backing.
A Truman confidante says the president withholds endorsing Adlai Stevenson until he sees Stevenson win at Chicago. He is "absolutely opposed" to Kefauver and uneasy Stevenson has not committed to the nomination. The president awaits convention developments before open support.
President Truman delays his flight to Chicago to Friday for the Democratic national convention address. Reports from Chicago suggest he will quickly announce his choice for the party nomination. The Thursday departure was shifted as delegates argued and ran behind schedule. He will travel by air with a 3 p.m. EST takeoff.
