Crowds converge as the Tongue River project ceremony begins with governor guest speaker and Montanans addressing thousands. The event marks the start of a major state water conservation initiative honoring community leaders and project milestones.
Thousands descend on Miles City for a monster conservation celebration. Gov Roy Ayers arrives with State Treasurer Ray Shannon and purchasing agent I B McQuitty as guest of honor and principal speaker for tomorrow's program.
Gov. Carl E Bailey of Arkansas was chosen by the Senate Democratic committee as the Democratic nominee for the seat left by the death of Senate Majority Leader Joseph T Robinson. The nomination secures Bailey’s path to the ballot, with a special election to appoint Robinsonson’s successor to follow. The general election is expected around September 14, and Bailey is likely to resign, handing the post to Lieut. Gov. Robert Bailey.
In Anaconda Country Club the 21st Montana golf tournament saw 22-year-old Thomas Mulholland of Butte Highland View, 16-year-old Dick Hughes of Billings, Eugene Jones of Butte, and George Sarsfield defending champion join the semi finals. Mulholland upset Paul Sechena of Great Falls while Sarsfield and Jones advanced with decisive wins.
The Roosevelt administration claimed its defeated court bill nudged the Supreme Court toward a broader constitutional reading. Officials urged urgent passage of wage hour, farm, and housing bills before adjournment, with Senator Barkley outlining a session plan and indicating the farm bill may be dropped. Garner pressed to wrap up business as talks continued.
Patriarch Varnae, head of the Greek Orthodox Church in Yugoslavia, died last midnight in Belgrade after claims he was poisoned amid a fight over a Vatican concordat. His followers blamed poisoning during the stand against the Vatican accord.

Montana highway officials announce a 50 mph speed limit on highways 10 and 110 between Butte and Anaconda. The new limit to take effect once warning signs are installed follows a crossing crash that killed two people and left one seriously injured.
Butte's American Legion post will send five delegates the post drum corps and about 50 more to the state convention in Lewis town tomorrow morning. Joseph H. Knuckey will lead the group with delegates James McCashin Fred Lehn Ralph Rand and James Comba. Alternates include C O Smith ers Carl Jehle Hugh R Doyle and Louis Davis. The 40 and 8 group opens meetings tomorrow evening. Montana forecast calls for generally fair and continued warmth Saturday and Sunday.
Washington July 23 The odds against new crop control legislation rose as Senator Barkley said the Senate agriculture committee likely cannot report a bill this session. The panel voted to hold extended regional hearings on the administration plan for an every normal granary and crop controls. Senator Black urged action before adjournment while Senator Pope noted the proposal had no timing stipulations.
From Salzburg Austria July 23 the Duke of Windsor’s car collided with a street car on arrival from Noetsch. He his passenger and aunt Mrs D Buchanan Merryman of Washington escaped unhurt and only the mudguard suffered damage.
Mrs Oswald Bailey, mother of Dorothy Krizan killed in an auto train wreck near Cracker ville, fainted and cried out a dream of her daughter's death as police and bystanders blocked a street. Dorothy Krizan and driver Curtis Bailey were involved. Bailey injured, Campbell Anaconda engineer in unrelated crash.
London reports Parliament approved sweeping changes to England and Wales divorce law. Adultery becomes sole ground for divorce, with desertion after three years cruelty and incurable insanity five years added. Scotland retains its desertion ground. attempts to add drunkenness life imprisonment and sexual abnormalities failed.
A brief but fierce wind storm at Fishing Bridge near Yellowstone Lake injures two children from Eden Idaho. The gusts toppled 150 to 200 pine trees and damaged housekeeping cabins. Joseph Joffe, assistant to the superintendent, reported.

Merit badge awards will be given as the third period registration continues. Cubs aged 9 to 12 stayed July 6 to 10, with the first week July 11–17 and the second week July 18 remaining.
