Washington reports a Johnson administration plan to raise U S advisory personnel in South Vietnam by about 530 percent, from 5,200 to roughly 7,800, by expanding Army advisers with Saigon’s regular army regional forces and popular forces to boost village defense against guerrilla attacks.
Officials expect South Vietnam’s popular forces to reach about 145000 with 50000 more to be added. A draft age reduction from 20 to 18 is discussed to support expansion. White House aides note inflation fears influenced Saigon to shift from civilian to military construction teams where feasible.
Carl Sandburg, renowned Lincoln biographer poet and folk singer, died at his Flat Rock North Carolina home on his 89th birthday weekend. The Pulitzer Prize winner was celebrated by presidents scholars and literary leaders.
