John Edward Plate 19 of 2319 Princeton Butte died when a car driven by Ronald W. Hanni struck a horse on Montana Highway 287 four miles north of Sheridan Saturday. Police said excessive speed may have caused the crash. Hanni and Ken West were treated for non serious injuries.
The Tass news agency said the Soviet Union would resume atmospheric nuclear testing, blaming the United States for provoking the move. It claimed safeguards would limit fallout and suggested the step could influence Geneva negotiations on disarmament.
Sixty two smokejumpers fought the Alder Creek Fire in the Bitterroot while awaiting more crews. The blaze grew from 200 to 800 acres and is not expected to be controlled before Monday. Glacier National Park fire near Upper Kindla Lake spans about 150 acres with several smaller fires reported region wide. Firefighting is aided by retardant drops and special northern Idaho fighters traveling by boat and hike into the blaze.
Eldon Lynn engineer and Jerry Haines fireman, both Missoula residents, received notices of dismissal from Northern Pacific. They were involved in the June 10 derailment on Evaro Hill that killed a child and wounded more than 200, with ICC hearings held earlier this month.
The last of the June 10 Northern Pacific train derailment victims was discharged from St. Patrick's Hospital in Missoula. Anna Cote of 219 W Granite Butte suffered back injuries after 40 days of treatment. Overall 75 hospitalized and 272 treated for injuries.
President Kennedy urged a 60 day delay to avert a potential strike that would halt most missile production and delay the space program. The IAM agreed to the request and cooperation was urged from all parties to avoid work interruption.
East of Divide shows partly cloudy and cooler conditions with highs 80 to 95 and Sunday near 75 in the far northeast. west of Divide stays fair and warm with highs 85 to 95. Lows range 40 to 60 in the west and 45 to 60 in the east. Readings end at 5 p.m. MST Saturday.
Robert Woolsey about 30 of Stevensville died Saturday night from injuries after a collision on U S Highway 93 near Stevensville. Ravalli County Sheriff Jack Cain said Woolsey riding a southbound motorcycle turned abruptly at the Stevensville turnoff and was struck by a northbound car driven by Guy Hollister of Spokane Washington who was not injured.
Secretary of State Rusk and Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko joined 12 other ministers at the Laos conference to pledge neutrality for Laos. The talks also touched on Berlin, disarmament, and a nuclear test ban amid a cordial session with Chen Yi and other diplomats.
UPI reports U. S. scientists repaired a large space rocket and prepared a fresh attempt to launch the Mariner-1 probe toward Venus. The 446 pound spacecraft aims to pass within 10 000 miles of Venus, with questions about life there guiding the mission.
W A Brown Jr of Helena named president elect of the Montana Consumer Finance Association at its third annual convention in Butte. Joseph H Irwin of Great Falls became president. I M Nyquist of Great Falls named secretary treasurer. More than 120 members attended with talks from officials including Albert Leuthold and George Parker.
The body of 12 year old Michael Dean Thiefault was recovered Friday night from an irrigation ditch about one mile downstream from his Hamilton home. Authorities say he toppled into the ditch near the Thiefault residence and a search began around 6 p.m. Rescuers attempted artificial respiration but were unable to revive him.
Cairo based UAR rockets reach 372 miles with two 40 foot Al Qahir and two Az Zafir units. Nasser claims large scale production and notes rockets could form a larger multi stage system. He dismisses any atomic warhead intent while joking a range is “a little south of Beirut.”
Kennecott Copper Corp and unions across Utah Nevada Arizona and New Mexico resume negotiations in Salt Lake City with a Monday strike deadline looming after Saturday talks. The International Union of Mine Mill and Smelter Workers and the Utah Unity Council lead discussions with Kennecott officials at 1 30 p m. Mine Mill covers about 4000 Kennecott workers across four states.
The Western District of the Runeberg Order wrapped up its four day convention in Butte with a banquet and ball. Delegates elected officers for three years and set next year’s gathering for Portland. Roy Eoping of Portland was named president along with Ruth Shutter Coos Bay Ore vice president Ilene Atchison Seattle secretary Rae Winger Salt Lake City treasurer Sig Sander Eureka Calif youth director Cliff Alskog Seattle and a trustees chair.
Supreme Lodge President Hannes Sutherland of Tacoma installed officers, acting as trustees chairman at the Butte convention. Rae Winger, another Supreme Lodge officer, attended as trustee. Delores Murto, president of the Butte lodge, presented the new officers at the banquet. Thomas Martin of Butte served as convention chairman.
Butte's Ed Zemljak and Billings' Maury Colberg meet today at the Butte Country Club for the Montana State Men's golf championship. Zemljak overcame a two hole deficit at halfway, winning 2 and 1 over Russ Hadley. Helena Colberg edged Danny Kane 1 up, while Kane carded a hole in one. Mrs Tremper of Missoula seeks a sixth state crown against Jewell Granley Lee of Butte.
