A U S government spokesman broadcasts in support of unconditional surrender, calling it the only path to salvation for Japan. The OWI notes the message is part of a general press release and urges Japan to halt hostilities to avoid further American enforcement of the peace formula.
Admiral Nimitz announced American cruisers and destroyers bombarded the entrance to Tokyo bay with no enemy air surface or submarine opposition. The fleet patrolled Sagami gulf entrance but found no enemy shipping. Nojima cape near Tokyo was shell affected.
Washington July 21 House members left for a 11 week break the longest since 1938 after a sluggish final session that raised pay for some legislative staff and debated horse meat as a topic. Only emergencies could recall them before October 8 with a light end to the session and sparse business completed. Capt Zacharias U S N warned Japanese leaders of two paths one leading to destruction and the other to unconditional surrender under the Atlantic Charter as released by the Office of War Information.
The Big Three end week one at Potsdam with Truman Churchill and Stalin reporting progress on Europe rehabilitation and Japanese resistance. Delegations say meetings totaled about 15 hours this week with daily formal sessions and work by Byrnes Eden Molotov. Churchill and Attlee watched the Desert Rats parade in Berlin’s Tiergarten.
Maj. Gen. Allen Turnage, director of Marine Corps personnel, said the greatest amphibious operations are in the making in the Pacific. He announced massing for strikes in the Marianas, the Philippines, Okinawa, and Iwo Jima as the Marine Corps prepares to go ashore wherever strategy directs. Turnage becomes assistant commandant of the Marine Corps August 1.
Congress tallies a potential 5.3 billion dollar Soviet aid package as a key Truman talking point for cooperation with the Soviet Union. President Truman seeks concessions in exchange for aid while preparing for the Potsdam talks with Churchill and Stalin.
Manila report by William C. Wilson cites Gen. Douglas MacArthur announcing allied and Japanese losses in Borneo. Japanese casualties reach 4,306 killed and 441 captured with 1,750 Allied dead or wounded. Allied air and sea actions disrupt shipping and targets across Borneo and surrounding regions.
Pvt. Gordon L. Sargent of Butte was wounded in the Okinawa fighting on June 20. Official Marine Corps notice says he returned to duty the same day and his wound is not serious. He attended Butte High and Butte Business College and briefly worked for the Northern Pacific before enlisting in California last November. His mother says he is not yet 18 and joined to follow his brother Darcy B. Sargent aboard the U S S Richmond in the Pacific.
Premier Stalin declared the Soviet people want a still stronger and mightier navy and will create new fighting ships and new bases for it. He spoke in an order of the day broadcast by Moscow radio in connection with Red Navy day observances. He did not specify the purpose for the stronger navy.
Chinese troops advanced to within eight miles of Kweilin after repelling Japanese counterattacks on the north side. Chungking said Chinese veterans held firm against the assault on the triple airfield base and then pressed the offensive toward the city from the north. Separate actions along China's southwestern coast saw Chinese flank attacks against Japanese forces near Amoy as they move toward Swatow.
Butte area forecast calls for clear to partly cloudy forenoon and widespread clouds with showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, clearing near dark. Temperatures peak around 84 while Saturday tops at 88 and lows near 45. West of divide expects much cloudiness and storms, east of divide remains hot with late afternoon storms.
Officers and delegates of the American Pioneer Trails Association led by Dr. Howard R. Driggs gather in Butte for the 140th Montana exploration anniversary. C. F. Kelley will keynote at Great Falls on July 25 but skips the Butte session. The four day convention runs July 24 to 27 with travel from Butte to Browning Helena and Three Forks, led by Norman B. Holter.
The London Sunday Express reports plans are proceeding at Buckingham Palace for a state banquet as President Truman is expected to make a brief London visit before month’s end.
S/Sgt. Bayne H. Hill of the 87th Mountain Infantry earned the Silver Star for gallantry near Bacucchi Italy on April 17 1945. He volunteered to assault a German fortress guiding a group that routed the enemy and helped capture 52 prisoners despite heavy fire. Hill is noted as the son of Mrs Grant Hill of Whitehall and husband of Mrs May Hill of 1830 Florence Butte.
State Department released 2 000 pages of 1930 foreign relations papers noting American financiers aided Germany to curb socialism. George Gordon reported to Henry Stimson that US interests backed Hitler to counter socialist trends, amid debates on a large German loan and reparations.
Fleet Adm Chester W Nimitz did not issue his usual daily communique on Sunday from Guam marking the third day without reports on damage to Tokyo Bay as American and British forces continued operations off Japan.
In Billings on Saturday a sailor, led by two women into the district court clerk's office, balked at obtaining a marriage license. When asked his name and if he wanted a license he equivocated before finally fleeing toward the door as the two women pursued him.
In a Comein dispatch Lt Gen Reikichi Tada says Japan will rely on a new secret weapon to win the forthcoming mainland invasion battle. Tokyo also reports ample scrap iron for weapons and fortifications and mobilizes 400000 communications workers into an actual fighting corps for defense of the country. Premier Suzuki explains the order fits area by area defense plans.
Senators Kilgore Mitchell and Ferguson said Germany could rapidly regain industrial strength. Kilgore estimated three to four fifths of German industry could be rehabilitated within three months to a year. Mitchell warned Germany remains a major power and could surpass 1939 strength in five years. They urged preventing a reemergence of aggressive war capabilities.
Rain falls over the 70 square miles of northwest Oregon as a westward fire threatens Cochran and embers spread toward Glenwood. About 2,000 firefighters struggle ten days with shifting winds while officials assess acreage and hope for continued rain to curb the blaze.
