The Federal Weather Bureau report for the week ended July 20 notes harvesting of winter wheat has started in parts of Montana and alfalfa is stacking. Moisture and cool weather aided crops, livestock and range feed, with irrigation progressing and water supplies adequate. Some counties saw floods but late in season.

Low Water in Rivers Forces Large Power Curtailments
Low water along the Missouri river and its tributaries has forced Anaconda to severely curtail operations. The Orphan Girl mine at Butte closes, with 280 workers partly retained for development. Other sites including East Helena slag plant Anaconda tailings and zinc concentrator shut. copper refinineries rolling mill and wire mill at Great Falls face curtailment. Montana Power reports installed capacity 294,000 kilowatts, river flow only 115,000, plus 40,000 bought power, totaling 170,000. Total demand runs about 240,000, so water shortage, not equipment, limits output. An additional 56,000 kilowatts to be added at Flathead, boosting capacity to 350,000 kilowatts or more.
