Blacktail Canyon Fire Near Butte Expands To 96 Acres
A wildfire in Blacktail Canyon four miles southeast of Butte grew to 96 acres by Saturday as air tankers and helicopters joined the effort. The blaze, reported Friday afternoon in the Homestake Pass area between I 90 and Highway 2, prompted evacuation warnings for nearby roads. Officials noted hot, dry conditions and extensive dead lodgepole pine, with Basin Creek Reservoir not currently at risk though conditions remain fluid. Nearby events, including the Butte 100 mountain bike race, were rerouted but occurred, while campsites around Homestake Lake were closed as helicopters drew water for firefighting.
