President Roosevelt officially sends Rexford Tugwell to Montana to assess drought conditions. He pledges rapid aid coordination with the Resettlement Administration and the WPA to reach farmers in dry regions and support relief efforts.
Rexford G. Tugwell said WPA and Resettlement Administration are delivering aid to thousands of farmers in the Dakotas Montana Wyoming Minnesota and other drought hit states. He noted the two agencies work in tandem to meet the emergency with immediate subsistence funds and a total program allotment of 1.5 billion dollars for WPA and related security funds, plus 85.5 million for the Resettlement Administration as it builds its full program.
About 1,000 firefighters battled three fires in the Lewis and Clark National Forest. The largest blaze, 45 miles southeast near Milligan in the Belt mountains, had 540 men encircled on a 17 mile front and burned thousands of acres of red fir and lodgepole pine. Another fire near Straight Creek, 75 miles west, covered about 500 acres with 300 men reporting containment. A third fire near Utica in the Belt mountains was also being fought as crews aimed to prevent spread.
About five thousand spectators are expected for the annual first-aid contest of the Butte mines teams for 750 dollars in prizes. The event August 2 at Columbia Gardens starts at 3 pm with a band concert by the Butte Mines Band. Judges from the U S Bureau of Mines will oversee five problems and judging with assistance from the Bureau of Safety. Refreshments will be served to women and children.
Gov. Alf M. Landon finished a 3,500 word acceptance speech and will relax with family before Thursday's ceremonies designating him the Republican presidential nominee. Advisers expect a 35 to 40 minute reading, with focus on agriculture relief employment finance tariff monopoly and the Constitution. He will attend a luncheon Thursday with the Republican National Committee and notification committee, then begin the program at 7 30 mountain time.
Crippled children of the city will be guests at the Butte Auxiliary picnic Aug. 22 at Basin Creek Reservoir. The event was announced at a Chamber of Commerce meeting. Miss Louise Schrupp, muscle training nurse, has returned from Glacier National Park and will resume treatments.

Butte cooled to 91 as 94 in Sunday heat gave way to a cooler day. Yesterday’s low was 51 with many vacationers returning home. Forecasts predict little change, though snow might return in two months, recalling August 1933.
Hollywood today sees a $5,000,000 dispute between Adolph Zukor of Paramount and Samuel Goldwyn over Gary Cooper. Zukor sues for $4,000,000 actual damages and $1,000,000 punitive damages, alleging Goldwyn lured Cooper away from Paramount.
Montana forecast calls for generally fair conditions Tuesday and Wednesday with little temperature change. Highs and lows stay near current norms across most counties as light winds prevail.
Governor Holt announced a $545000 federal loan for Rock Creek near Red Lodge in Carbon county has been approved and deposited in the federal reserve bank. He noted about $1900000 additional federal aid is expected for six other projects including Willow Creek Smith River Conrad Park Branch Canal Livingston Ditch and Flint Creek.
After weeks of prep, Silver Bow County opens 63 precinct polling places at noon for the July 21 primary. 25 092 registered voters may choose among more than 200 candidates as 303 judges from both parties oversee polling places. Ballots and poll books have been prepared and delivered.
Helena July 20. Voters set to choose nominees for national state and county offices in Montana's primary. A record 251 807 registered across 1 237 precincts. Democratic and Republican ballots feature national and state races with 124 candidates. 2000 seek county posts. Main interest centers on the Democratic governor nomination with five candidates. Four people died at Sunriver 30 miles west of Great Falls after a swimming accident during a family reunion. Thomas Heal Jr and his sister perished after a struggle in deep water, followed by the father and two rescuers, with Mrs. Van Koten also drowning while aiding.
In Miles City on July 20 Governor Elmer Holt rushed home due to his mother Mrs. B K Holt being critically ill. Mrs. Holt, a pioneer southeastern Montana resident, is Mrs. T A Mapes of Denver, who arrived Sunday.
Seven boys and one girl aged 11 to 18 were burned when acid was thrown from a second story window as they played cards on a Troy porch. Police described the attack as unprovoked and by an unknown assailant.
The Madrid government warned of a decisive today battle with rebel troops as police kept watch on the French border at Hendaye. Officials claimed control of Madrid while reports from outside sources described ongoing revolt and bloodshed across Spain with thousands dead. Rebel leader General Francisco Franco reportedly sought a seaplane escape from Seville as bombardment smashed garrisons in Madrid.
Er nest Sorenson, 35, of Horse Prairie, was found unconscious beside a road near Armstead and taken to Barrett hospital in serious condition. Sheriff McCollum said investigators believe a hit and run may have struck him while he walked or lay by the road. Two men found with Sorenson earlier are being held for questioning.
Enrollment cards show 70 percent of Anaconda company workers applying for a low cost group policy costing 60 cents per 1000 dollars per month. Large districts report high uptake including Butte with 381 enrollments and Great Falls plants with 1011 of 1288 and 92 percent at Wire & Cable in Great Falls.
