Former U S senator Ed B Johnson of South Dakota died at his Platte home yesterday from heart disease. He was elected on the Democratic ticket in 1914, born in Owen County Indiana, moved to South Dakota in 1884 and resided in Douglas County. He served as Douglas County state’s attorney and was elected to the state senate in 1895.
The county board of commissioners and the county superintendent of schools will hold a public meeting Monday at 10 a.m. in the courthouse to hear objections to the school district budgets. Jimmie Mattern, round the world flyer, arrived in Nome Alaska by a Soviet seaplane piloted by Levanovsky after ditching six miles west of Nome on June 14 due to fuel loss. The voyage aimed to beat the 1931 record by Wiley Post and Harold Gatty. A New York rescue party led by William Alexander chartered an Alaska plane to reach Nome after his ship grounded near Prince Rupert.
Rapidly spreading blaze near the Foster Creek watershed northwest of Anaconda driven by high winds and dry underbrush. A 200 man crew from the Warm Springs Creek fire fought the flames as they moved north and east up steep ridges toward Lost Creek and Race Track Creek, with conditions expected to ease as night approached.
