New York officials warn of a growing drug abuse problem among youths from inhaling aerosols such as spray deodorants and cleaners. FDA data show over 100 deaths since 1967 with about four per month currently. experts call for explicit warnings on labels and safer propellants.
Labor disputes across rail, communications, shipping, and mining echo nationwide as Phonemen approve a 33 percent wage rise over three years totaling about 4 billion dollars. Average weekly pay would rise to 29 dollars, with current wages near 3.43 dollars per hour. Telegraph workers in big cities also gain extra pay, notably New York City.

Vice President Agnew’s overseas trip sought to counter isolationist mood in the United States by listening to hosts in Kuwait Saudi Arabia and other nations. He told reporters that Washington would protect allies while pursuing relations with Vietnam the Soviet Union and China.
Josephine McArthur, longtime head of the Rovner Silver Bow Department of Public Welfare, resigns effective July 30 after joining the welfare staff in 1941 and serving as director since 1946. In her letter she cites mixed feelings and notes retirement at this time. A successor will be chosen after August 1 by county commissioners with state welfare report.
