Soviet Sailors Boarded US Tanker at Sea in Neutral Waters

Captain Fertig of the Sister Katinga described Soviet sailors boarding the American tanker 24 miles from Novorossiysk and holding the crew at gunpoint for five hours over a cargo unloading dispute. He said shots were fired and the ship was kept until he signed a Russian statement. Crew members said the grain was destined for Cuba.

Merrilee Miller Named Miss Montana of 1964

Merrilee Gay Miller a 20 year old Western Montana College coed from Radersburg won Miss Montana 1964 in Billings after three days of judging. She will represent Montana at Miss America in Atlantic City. Runnerup was Danene Lynn Schoessler and second runnerup Judith Rose Goyins. Mil lington First Lady Mrs Tim Babcock placed the crown. Miller received a $1000 scholarship a $500 wardrobe and $500 in jewelry plus a $50 hat and $20 gift certificate.

Harlem Riots Follow Negro Boy Funeral

Rioting erupted in Harlem for a second night as gangs clashed with police after the funeral of 15 year old James Powell who was killed by a white officer. A CBS cameraman was injured during the clashes as officers tried to control the crowd outside the funeral home.

Big Hole Battlefield Highway Dedicated in Montana

The 2 million Big Hole Battlefield Highway opens a 26 mile Montana route from Wisdom west to Lost Trail Pass intersecting U S 93. About 2,500 attendees from Bitterroot Valley and beyond gathered for a cattle country ceremony with speakers including Gov. Tim Babcock and Rep. Arnold Olsen.

Weather outlook across Butte Anaconda region turns humid

Forecast shows fair conditions with partly cloudy skies and afternoon thunderstorms across the Butte Anaconda area. Renne Predicts Ugly Campaign in Montana Gubernatorial Race

Democratic challenger Roland Renne charged an ugly, vicious general election campaign for governor against Republican Tim Babcock. At a Yellowstone County rally he warned of extremist support, criticized Babcock’s leadership, and outlined four more alleged Irresponsibilities, including tax shifts, opposition to dams, federal aid attacks, and politicizing the state administration.

Dillon Man's Body Recovered From Big Hole River

The body of 63-year-old Dillon sporting goods dealer Dave Stratford was found by Bob Toivonen and Ed Leritz on a Big Hole River sandbar near Melrose. Stratford drowned June 28 when a rubber raft with two Californians overturned upstream. Recovery was directed by Beaverhead Sheriff Lloyd Thomas.
