59 700 Workers Out on Strike
The Associated Press reports production in at least 27 plants, mines and shipyards continued downward as major labor disputes kept idle more than 59 700 workers. In the Detroit area five disputes idle 24 600, including 14 000 idle Thursday amid 200 lumber yards in a contract clash. Death by fish bite ends Guatemala river swim

Aussies Seize Cambodian Oil Field Without Fight
Australian troops in a five mile thrust seized the Cambodian oil field and the Balikpapan refining center without a fight. The Seventh Australian division moved into the oil region amid fires as the field's wells were damaged by fire set by retreating Japanese. Pint Sized Paratrooper Perez Earns Medal of Honor

Forest Fire Threatens Northwest Towns in Oregon
