London reports that Russia has rejected American and British representations on seizure of Austrian property for reparations totaling 22 million dollars. The Soviet occupation authorities insist there is no change in their stance on confiscation of Austrian industrial plants and other assets seized by Germany after the 1938 Anschluss.
An 80-year-old film art director Wilfred Buckland killed his 35-year-old son Billy, then shot himself after leaving a note naming William DeMille as executor. Police say Billy had recent mental illness and was living with his father in a secluded Hollywood hillside home. The double death occurred as a Negro chauffeur found them. Billy died instantly, the father died later in transit. The note mentions relatives and a schedule for valuables and an executor.
McChord Field reports wreckage sighted on Saddle Mountain near Ellensburg and Cascade range. Initial assessment says the plane is not a private craft. The burned fuselage and tail sections reportedly lodged in trees after an in-flight explosion.
An abandoned suitcase rigged as a booby trap exploded in Mokelumne Hill California injuring three others and killing Richard Quierolo 40 and his eight year old son David who tried to open the bag The blast also injured Dora Quierolo and Olive Moffitt and Jack Quierolo shook the town damaged the post office and telephone exchange and drew FBI help while witnesses described shrapnel and smashed windows in the incident.
In Seaside Village Onset, Wareham mass, July 18, an explosion killed several and injured over 60. Rescue teams pulled eight bodies from debris as four buildings collapsed. Most fatalities occurred in the structures. gas leakage preceded the blast, traced to a broken cellar pipe. Dozens treated at improvised stations. many victims were summer tourists. The Associated Press reports a blazing sun pushed Midwest temperatures above 100 in spots with Dodge City 101 and Kansas City 100. Readings ranged mainly in the 90s from Iowa to Indiana, Chicago hit a yearly high of 98, Omaha reached 93 by noon. Forecasters expect cooler weather by week’s end as conditions ease eastward.

Authorities in three states press the search for 60 year old Col H C Muhlenberg his wife and mother in law missing two weeks on a trip to California. He left July 5 to keep a business engagement in Los Angeles July 12 carrying a large amount of money. Muhlenberg was once chief aviation instructor at the University of Washington and commanded Hickman Field in Hawaii before retiring in 1942 after 37 years service.
London reports a sharp clash in the House of Commons as Winston Churchill pressed to drop the bread rationing order. Prime Minister Strachey refused to withdraw, arguing no more wheat could be obtained. The session featured heated exchanges and crowds in the gallery during the prelude to a food debate.
Washington July 18 U P Senate House conferees remain deadlocked on reviving price controls with a three man subcommittee led by George L Radcliffe Robert A Taft and Charles W Tobey to decide how far the Senate will back down on decontrol amendments The move seeks a compromise on exempting food and other commodities from price control while the two houses negotiate final terms.
BASIN July 18 Sheriffs report a posse captured a big burly man in Basin Creek canyon after the fugitive tried to molest two teen girls near Basin. The eldest, 13, fled screaming, guiding deputies to the suspect who was jailed at Boulder. The youngest suffered a bruise and black eye. charges likely follow.
Georgia governor Eugene Talmadge, a white supremacist candidate, wins a fourth term aided by rural county unit votes. With 1,476 of 1,735 precincts reporting, he leads Carmichael in unit votes 249 to need 206, while Carmichael trails in popular votes 256,876 to 238,324, Rivers at 53,356. Carmichael concedes as small counties finish counting reflective of Talmadge’s nationwide rural support.
From Bikini Atoll the USS Mr McKinley reports a substitute flash bomb exploded 20 minutes early during a dress rehearsal of the underwater atomic Baker day test. Cause cited as a short circuit. ABC noted if Baker Day July 24 had held, the atom bomb would have exploded ahead of schedule.
Butte expects clear to partly cloudy conditions Friday and Friday night with warmer temperatures. CHICO Calif July 18 UP five charges of murder attempted murder and assault were filed against 14 year old Albert Jones a Chico high school student who confessed strangling and burning to death Patricia Crandall on June 15 and shooting at Hazel Nielsen and her husband H P Nielsen. He faced arraignment and potential transfer to juvenile or superior court. He remained in Butte County jail described as calm and unworried.
The House voted 127 to 96 to seat military representatives on a domestic atomic energy controls commission. The measure requires one armed forces member as a commissioner with option for a second. Civilian majority on the Senate bill opposed by the White House and armed services leaders. Debate and amendments cloud final passage as a conference with the Senate looms.
