Roosevelt nominates Henry A. Wallace as his vice presidential choice amid a divided convention with boos and calls for a real Democrat. Wallace’s selection follows a tense floor scene as Michigan delegation shifts support.
President Roosevelt said he cannot turn away from a call to service and would serve a fourth term if nominated and drafted, with God’s help and strength. He spoke after Henry A. Wallace’s nomination as running mate as war across the seas shapes the crisis.
Berlin bells greet troops returning from France as German air force intensifies raids on Britain The high command reports raids on Aldershot and targets across southern and central England while German ships attack vessels in the Channel The note ends with a continuation line to Page 2 Col 6.
Harry E. Smith of Helena filed as a Republican candidate for justice of the peace in Helena township. He voted Tuesday and learned he was nominated for constable. He declined the constable nomination and will run for justice of peace in November as an independent. County Clerk A J Duncan blamed a ballot proofreading error.
Governor Roy E. Ayers leads the Montana Democratic primary with an unofficial margin of 978 votes over Arthur F. Lamey based on 1,145 of 1,195 precincts. Results are unofficial and continued on page 7.
Tabulation of Republican write in votes from Tuesday's primary was under way and expected to finish in time for Monday’s official canvass. County clerk Addis McGrath said only one race looked close enough to change, the ten Democratic nominations for state legislature where Henry Mernin led Denis McCarthy by 38 votes for the tenth slot after unofficial tallies from 63 precincts.
The Montana State Association of Rural Letter Carriers meets at the Leggat hotel with wives attending the two day convention. J H Doerr of Helena serves as secretary and Jess Comstock of Butte calls the session to order. Mayor Hauswirth welcomes the group as Leland Walker of Oklahoma addresses the gathering.
In Silver Bow county the Democratic ticket renominated ten representatives for the state lower house. Paul Cannon led with 5897 votes, followed by Mike Loughran Phil C Goodwin Thomas G Stimatz Walter C Freshman Sam Spiegel John OBrien Walter T Ballard Peter J Curran and Henry Mernin with Mernin edging Denis McCarthy by 38 votes for the tenth spot. Republican candidate George H Wade had 2096 votes.
Chicago dated July 18 Everett Watkins of the Indianapolis Star opened an envelope given by Vice President Garner on March 30. The bet was $1 against Watkins $10 that Garner named the Democratic nominee. The envelope revealed Garner had written Franklin D Roosevelt as the nominee, confirming his loss of the nomination.
In Chicago a Norwalk Connecticut man John McGrath says he never has trouble finding a seat in convention hotel lobbies, a claim contrasted by E. W. Hale of Memphis and W. T. McCarthy of Butte who report long histories of crowding and no room to sit.
Senator Ed C. Johnson of Colorado dismissed Roosevelt leaders choice Henry A Wallace for vice president calling him a rubber stamp. Johnson, a Wheeler backer, supports non intervention in Europe and opposes reciprocal trade deals. He praised the 1940 platform’s peace plank, noting it made the party a peace party.
Secretary of State Sam Mitchell informed Governor Ayers that only the $850000 Montana State College bond issue would appear on the November ballot. Three other proposed initiatives failed to reach required signatures, including the "60-60" old age pension plan after withdrawals left 6404 signatures.
The War department disclosed an experimental parachute troop platoon of two officers and 48 volunteers from Fort Benning to train July 29 to August 3 at Safe Parachute Company in Highstown New Jersey near Fort Dix. The program aims to build a nucleus for larger units and aligns with plans to train 7 000 pilots and 3 600 bombardiers and navigators annually at Ellington Field Texas.
Partly cloudy conditions in Montana on Friday and Saturday with scattered afternoon or evening thunder showers in mountains and extreme south areas Friday. Warmer temperatures expected in the west and central regions Friday and in the extreme east portion Saturday.
In a terse Commons address Churchill outlines Britain's peril at home and empire. He orders ministers to sleep at desks and accepts yielding to Japan on distant fronts while suspending transport of ammunition and supplies to China for three months. He denies mass exodus to overseas.
Republican nominee Willkie met Governor George Wilson of Iowa in Colorado Springs to discuss farm problems and planned a Des Moines meeting around August 5 with agricultural representatives. He hailed Senator Edward Burke’s pledge to bolt the Democratic party to back him.
