A spectacular water front blaze in San Francisco caused $50 000 to $100 000 damage. Two firemen injured and investigators suspect a cigarette or hot pitch started the fire at the George W Kneass shipyard. The Twiggs shipbuilding plant roof burned along with seven cruising launches and fourteen skiffs destroyed.
Government drought relief officials raised WPA employment quotas in western drought areas from 50 000 to 65 000 jobs. Totals include 25 900 in North Dakota 25 000 in South Dakota 6 000 in Montana 6 000 in Wyoming and 3 000 in Minnesota. About 22 000 farmers were employed this week. Soil conservation rules were broadened to allow haying of cover crops used for forage in the western area.
Norman Thomas, Socialist candidate, told Townsend club delegates that the old age pension plan is unworkable. The convention voted to keep Dr Francis Townsend in control of the movement despite attacks on the plan and calls to join the Socialistic movement.
Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming reports completion of improvements to 196 miles of its highway system for the fiscal year. A current modernization program adds 195 miles, including 96 miles seal coat surfacing and 28 miles graveling.
July reports from Madrid and French Morocco describe Premier Santiago Casares Quiroga quitting the government. British troops prepare at Gibraltar for possible border action as La Linea is occupied on the Spanish side. Clashes in Melilla leave many dead or wounded as rebels press control of Morocco, with loyalist forces deploying from Ceuta.
Cool rains end a 15 day 100 degree run across the farm belt raising hopes for three or four days of relief. The death toll near 1,800 in Minnesota Michigan and Wisconsin drops as showers hit Illinois and nearby states. Grain prices ease while corn and wheat slip on the rain revived crop outlook. A blistering sun sent temperatures higher with a 95 degree reading. Butte remained dry without its usual shower as rainfall days fell below the three quarters mark. The 24 hour minimum dropped to 48 as the season saw limited 90 plus heat days.
Carl J. Trauerman of Butte was re elected president of the Mining Association of Montana at the close of a two day meeting. Officers chosen by acclamation include Stanley Moore as vice president F C Gilbert as secretary and Dr Francis A Thomson as secretary of the executive committee. The group slated next year’s meeting for Virginia City with slogans Once More to the Frontiers and On to Virginia City. The winter meeting will be in Helena in January or February, subject to the legislative committee chair George Conway.
Enrollment cards for low cost group life insurance drew strong interest among Anaconda Copper Mining Company workers in the western district. By the third day 49.7 percent of 11 605 eligible employees in Idaho Wyoming and the western district had signed up, with 5764 cards returned. The company subsidizes a portion of the cost and the plan offers permanent life insurance at 60 cents per month per $1000, with many departments already at full enrollment. Some workers already insured under a prior arrangement are converting to the new plan.
Mayor Ralph Arnold of Missoula was chosen president of the Montana City Government Welfare association at the end of the association's two day annual convention in Billings.
More than 500 firefighters battle wildfires on multiple fronts in the Lewis and Clark National Forest. About 200 crews on Straight Creek west of Great Falls work a 40 acre blaze. 250 crews near Millegan fight a Judith River south fork fire. smaller teams tackle two fires near the Continental Divide summit west of Great Falls.
Helena reports baking temperatures east of the continental divide intensifying the Montana drought and raising the forest fire hazard. The parching sun dries forests making them vulnerable to lightning. continued in next page.
Helena report states Governor Elmer Holt cast an absent ballot in Miles City to vote ahead of the state primary. He seeks renomination to the office he currently holds and plans to be in Helena for business on election day.
Renewed earthquakes shook Milton Freewater and surrounding areas at 8 30 this morning adding to the 50 000 in losses from Wednesday. Athena and Touchet saw further damage to stucco and brick as cans fell in Utah cannery. A brief Walla Walla quake jarred the region but caused no damage.
Twenty year old Peter Dana, great grandson of Richard Henry Dana, landed at Long Beach Airport Long Island after 22 hours 5 minutes from San Diego in a light monoplane. He hoped to secure a seaplane job in New Hampshire and said self financing made the trip necessary. Dana is also a great grandson of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
The forecast calls for generally fair conditions in Montana over Sunday and Monday. A slightly cooler air mass will affect areas east of the divide.
Twelve upper class geology students from Michigan College of Mining and Technology at Houghton will arrive in Butte about August 1. Led by Kiril Spiroff they will operate the Tamarack mine property for 10 days and tour several other mines with the help of local officials including Alexander Leggat and J. J. Carrigan of Anaconda Copper. The trip follows an earlier July 13 start on Minnesota's Mesaba range with stops at Cuyuna, Medora, and planned visits to Helena Marysville Helmsville Anaconda Great Falls and Hughesville.
More than 2000 candidates seek national state and county offices as Montana Republicans and Democrats prepare for Tuesday primaries. The secretary of state reports 251,807 registered voters, the largest in state history, amid focus on the gubernatorial race and bids for U S Senate and house seats. Senator James E Murray faces Chief Justice Walter Sands and Justice S V Stewart, with Congressman Joseph P. as a contender.
