Washington UPI reporting that the Kennedy medical care for the aged bill failed in the Senate by 52 to 48. Kennedy called the vote a serious defeat and urged voters to make it a campaign issue. He vowed to renew the fight when Congress reconvenes in January and appealed to voters in the November elections.

A Butte jewelry firm filed to intervene as a party plaintiff in the Helena district court stamp case. If granted, Gordon's Jewelry will join Garden Spot Market in challenging the 1961 Montana anti stamp law. Damage suit seeks $182778 in Bowman estate claim
Judge asked to award $182778.80 to the estate of Niles A. Bowman in a district court action filed by administrator Paul Ogilvie against O L Long. Bowman died after a June 1 head on collision 342 miles south of Sheridan in Madison County. Butte mining operations resumed with normal crews at the Anaconda Co. mines and shops while Berkeley Pit remained strikebound. Teamsters Local No. 2 withdrew pickets from mine yards but kept them at the Pit and other company sites. A union meeting was planned for Wednesday as mediators left town. Kenneth Davis said the union would not seek a full shutdown given the company’s willingness to move from its original bargaining position.

Settlement Details Unveiled Between Crafts and Anaconda Co
The 28 unions in Butte Anaconda and Great Falls ratified a settlement with Anaconda Co for 1 027 employees. The agreement, reached after marathon talks led by Bob McCelland, provides a 2 5 cent per hour raise in 1962 and 5 cent raise in 1963 retroactive to April 1 1962 and July 1 1963 respectively, expiring July 1 1964. It also amends the pension plan to include vesting for deferred pensions and outlines eligibility and calculation rules for employees leaving between ages 40 and 60. The sides will hold union votes Monday night to approve the action.

Hamilton Man Killed Fighting First Major Fire of Season
William M. Thompson, 23, of Hamilton, died when a falling tree struck him while battling the first major forest fire of the season in Bitterroot National Forest. The blaze near the Selway Bitterroot area drew 100 firefighters aided by air drops from Missoula. Sheriff-Coroner Jack Kane planned an investigation. Thompson, a two season forest service worker, is survived by parents, siblings, and grandfather Joseph Sten, a former Hamilton mayor and Ravalli County legislator.

Air Force test pilot Bob White reached 310000 feet 58.7 miles in the X15 flight to become America's fifth astronaut and the first in a winged craft above 50 miles.
