The Butte Daily Post will merge with The Montana Standard to form The Montana Standard and Butte Daily Post. The seven day morning paper will publish starting July 24, with the Post’s final afternoon issue on July 21. The merged paper will offer broader coverage, more illustrations and added features.
Forrest D. Wilson a 44 year old head coach at Butte High School was named principal for one year succeeding Charles C. Davis who left to head the Butte School Dist No 1. The board confirmed the selection after evaluating several applicants amid protests over secrecy and the lack of public candidate details.
The Montana forecast calls for fair weather in the east with a Tuesday to Wednesday cooldown and highs from 75 to 90 degrees. In the west region expect fair skies with minimal temperature change, highs around 80 to 85 and Tuesday night lows near 45.
Detroit AP reports 30 year old Policeman Lawrence McDonald dropped his service revolver while cleaning it at home. The gun fired through a door and travelled 138 feet down the street striking his seven year old daughter Linda as she played with other children.
Butte area educators depart Monday on a four day Texas Air Force training institutions tour. The program educates teachers to advise youths on military training and includes visits to Brooks AFB Lackland AFB and Randolph AFB near San Antonio with lodging at the Aero Space Medical Center.

Mrs. Jessie L. Hill 56 of Columbia Falls Montana died from injuries after a traffic collision in Lake City Colorado on July 6. Two other drivers Lyman G. Hill also of Columbia Falls and George W. Hoser of Tremont Pennsylvania suffered minor injuries. State Patrol said Hill attempted a left turn onto State Highway 82 as the other car emerged.
The Portsmouth naval shipyard announced the USS Abraham Lincoln, the Navy's first Polaris missile submarine, is now headed to sea. The ship is described as the most modern and effective ballistic submarine in the fleet.
The Montana Public Service Commission outlined its approach to determining a fair rate of return as hearings continue on Montana Power Co.’s request to raise natural gas rates by 2.7 million dollars annually. The commission cites Tobacco River Power Co. vs. Public Service Commission as guiding procedure.

Ty Cobb, known as the Georgia Peach and one of baseball’s greatest players, died at 74 after cancer at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. He played 24 major league seasons, 22 with the Detroit Tigers, retiring with a .367 lifetime batting average and multiple hitting records.

Albert Chouinard age 60 of 2121 Grand died Monday in a local hospital after a three month illness. He was deputy clerk and recorder of Silver Bow County born November 30 1900 in Nashua New Hampshire and moved to Butte 58 years ago. He married Ruth Stuard in 1928 and was active in bowling golf and local fraternal groups. Survived by his wife a son and daughter in law Robert and wife.
London reports Prime Minister Harold Macmillan's government preparing crisis measures to avert pound devaluation and tackle economic ills. Traders fear a dividend cap, hoping unions will accept wage restraint as Chancellor Selwyn Lloyd prepares a major Commons statement.
BA&P nonoperating unions rested in a federal suit seeking to compel Anaconda Co and Metropolitan Life to justify not issuing a temporary injunction. Judge Murray took motions for dismissal under advisement and recessed until Tuesday. Testimony described BA&P coverage under Metropolitan and Travelers policies and the company plan to reduce Metropolitan by the Travelers amount. Witnesses included BA&P executives and union officials detailing discussions about canceling Metropolitan and choosing one policy. A strike vote followed as the unions challenge the insurer reduction and policy mix.
A driver named Pat Lavelle, about 24, of Butte, was uninjured after stopping inches from a 20 foot drop into Silver Bow Creek on the Texas Avenue overpass. Police officer William Ryan said Lavelle missed the turn while exiting onto Texas Avenue.
