A two story brick building at 400 S Washington, formerly Columbia Hospital, burned Wednesday evening from an unknown source. The vacant 1898 structure drew thousands as firefighters from all three shifts battled the blaze. Owner Mrs. Joseph P Monaghan, a longtime local attorney, once occupied part of the building. no injuries were reported.

Edward Tirtz, 40, a well known Paradise Valley rancher near Livingston, was found dead with a gunshot wound in a field above his ranch home. Park County coroner Wesley Cloyd termed the death accidental and instantaneous. no inquest is planned. Survivors include his widow Eldean and two daughters Janet and Diane. Services set for Friday at First Baptist Church.

Wounded gunman traps Babylon area with siege on residents
In Babylon and Amityville New York a wounded gunman 32 year old George Larned who was shot during a police gun duel last week holed up in woods and swamps vowing to kill anyone who interferes. More than 200 officers armed with submachine guns tear gas and shotguns hunted him as he hid by day and moved by night. Arthur Tudo Stagnoli 47 a disabled World War II veteran collapsed and died during an Elk s picnic at Basin Creek Reservoir near Butte. He was rushed to a hospital but declared dead on arrival.
