Possible Hanoi trials of POWs could escalate war

US sources warn that trying and executing captured American pilots as war criminals would prompt a major escalation of air war against North Viet Nam. Senators urged Hanoi to refrain. Official POW counts total 183 in North Viet Nam and 104 in South Viet Nam with many missing or suspected.

Western Fish and Game Leaders Tackle Central Flyway

Twenty two resolutions were adopted by the Western Association of State Fish and Game Commissioners at its 46th annual conference in Honolulu with over 500 attendees from 13 states and British Columbia. Police target jaywalkers with fines and tow rule

Police Chief James Clark announced a city wide effort to arrest jaywalkers starting Monday. Offenders will face a five dollar fine and parked cars blocking crosswalks will be towed as a pedestrian hazard.

Five Teenagers Die in Montana Car Crash

A nine passenger station wagon in a caravan of teen travelers from eastern states was struck by a semi truck at Bowman's Corner on Montana Highway 20 near Great Falls. Five youths were killed and four injured. Names of the deceased include Sara English 15 Summit New Jersey and Cynthia Taylor 17 Madison New Jersey. The truck driver Lowell Larson 25 Missoula and the north Caldwell New Jersey driver William Nunamacher 36 were hospitalized. The tour had camped in Helena and was bound for Glacier National Park. The crash raised Montana's road toll for the year to 142.

Massacre survivor recalls Chicago tragedy details

The nurse survivor of Chicago's town house massacre described hours of horror as eight student nurses were murdered. Police released her hospital interview, noting she identified some suspects in photos and could recognize the killer if seen again. Autopsy found no sexual assault indicators and tests on vaginal smears would yield results next week.

Low bid on Metro Sewer phase for Butte area

County commissioners opened three sealed bids for the Metropolitan Sewer District phase one. Statewide Contractors Inc. of Murray, Utah submitted the low bid at 991 445.71, with Naranche Konda Construction Co. of Butte at 1 190 247.79 and Felton Construction Co. of Missoula at 1 108 034.79. The bids were read by county clerk William T. Duckham and will be studied through Tuesday as Metro District engineer Walter Everly reviews the proposals.

Gunman robs Butte service station for $150

A man about 29 or 30 walked into the S Enco station at 1500 Harrison around 9 Friday night and demanded money from the cash register claiming a gun. He escaped with $150 in bills while the attendant, Bill Sullivan, 18, reported no weapon shown. Authorities noted this was the third robbery in Butte that week.
