Derailment Slows Berkeley Pit Operations
Eight BA&P ore cars derailed near the Texas Avenue bridge delaying Berkeley Pit work for about ten hours. About 120 feet of track were torn loose after the noon incident. one train managed to pass, but cars toppled only slightly. A switch was struck by a derailed car, BA&P worker said. Thirty men worked until 10 p.m. to resume normal operations.

A car struck a deer on U S Highway 2 and plunged into Lake McGregor near Kalispell. The incident occurred at 5 30 am as Montana's 1961 traffic toll rose with nine highway fatalities in three days.
