Bandits attacked Shayuchung post 12 miles east of British Hong Kong killing and wounding soldiers. Captain Wong Ya-tcheung reported 37 wounded and 40 of his 160 men killed or captured after a four hour battle. Outpost and customs station burned.
Helena Fire Chief J M Munger said rural protection contracts with the city fire department cover about 15 percent of farms residences and businesses outside Helena city limits. He noted the program is the most complete rural protection in the state and that Helena was first to implement such plans, followed by other cities in response to the national fire waste council drive to cut rural fire losses.
HELENA July 15 Eighty five per cent of Montana's spring highway breakup has been repaired and work is progressing on the remainder in every part of the state State Highway Engineer Scott P Hart said. Hart said 759 maintenance workers are repairing highway surface and doing other maintenance work to get highways in the best shape. He said most roads have dried out enough to permit steady work on them but in some mountain areas and on passes such as Mac Donald near Helena the base and sub base is so jellylike yet from moisture as to make work difficult if not impossible. Ordinarily the April breakup at the end of winter can be repaired in May but this year the breakup continued through May and June with no possibility of repairing the April breakup because of continued rains. This, he said, makes it necessary to repair three months breakup in July. He said that inspections indicate that work is progressing satisfactorily.
About 50 delegates from seven Croatian brotherhood chapters will convene in Lewistown for the biennial convention. Kalispell man Mahoney about 50 died suddenly in the Eagles hall while attending the state Eagles convention in Great Falls. He collapsed at a table. police and firemen failed to revive him. Coroner Dr. Lee Roy MacBurney said likely heart failure. His wife was away at the auxiliary meeting and a Forsyth nephew was in town.
Helena Montana July 15 Montana bond sales director Arthur Nelson said $8 226 100 worth of United States savings bonds were purchased from April 1 to July 10. The figure equals 58 percent of the security loan drive quota. County totals include Yellowstone 863 400 Cascade 791 000 Lewis and Clark 732 400 Silver Bow 692 800 Missoula 322 600 Hill 255 900 Flathead 234 500 Gallatin 237 100.
Helena July 15 The Montana board of education will meet July 26 to discuss scholarships for university units approve diplomas for June graduates of the six units hear student loan reports consider staff changes and approve a budget for the extension service. The session will be the first in Helena in two years. The group has been meeting at site of the university units.

The Red Lodge Drum and Eugle corps won first place in the state competition conducted in connection with the Montana Eagles convention here Thursday night. Great Falls and Butte corps were second and third respectively. The three were the only corps enter in the annual competition. Montana Eagles gathered in Great Falls for a four day convention with nearly 1,000 delegates. Edward F. Poss urged social legislation including a national health bill and extended social security coverage. The convention opens with ritualistic drill compe titions and sessions, with Helena defending the men’s drill title and Lewistown, Missoula, and Red Lodge competing in drum corps and bands.

Also noted are visits by Mrs Jack Denny and children from Helena, Mrs Bert Weatherstone s Tacoma trip, Los Angeles guests P GC Fowler Roy Howe touring the Northwest, and Republican attorney general candidate E Felt visiting Deer Lodge friends.
Tokyo reports reveal a previously unpublished Tojo document written before his 1945 attempted suicide. In it he urges Japa nese to await a future rise, denounces allied atomic bomb use, concedes defeat, and claims the land of the gods will be restored despite occupation. The draft, kept by Naomichi Jin, was authenticated by Tojo via Shiobara as the trial began.
In Kunming two gendarmes were killed and more than 100 students and gendarmes injured in a daylong campus battle. Gendarmes described as strictly unarmed stormed university buildings to eject about 400 barricaded students.

The Inniskillins Fusiliers' First Battalion en route to Singapore will be arriving soon. Sir Alec Newboult, acting high commissioner, said security forces are insufficient to cope with violence as police rounded up over 150 suspected guerrillas in South Johore after a patrol encounter.
