President Johnson announced the death of Adlai E Stevenson in London during a lunch with the U S Japan cabinet committee. He ordered flags at half staff and urged continuation of peace efforts, calling Stevenson a beacon for a decent world order.
Adlai F Stevenson former U S ambassador to the United Nations and two time Democratic presidential hopeful collapsed on Upper Grosvenor Street in London near the U S Embassy. He died of an apparent heart attack after doctors treated him at the scene and in an ambulance. A BBC interview conducted shortly before his death was broadcast later that night as officials noted his continuing support of U S policy.
The House passed a bill to reduce silver content in future half dollars while quarters and dimes would contain none. The 255 to 151 vote sent the measure to a Senate House conference to resolve differences with the Senate version. He is the second Montana student to win the top prize after Daniel Smith of Anaconda Catholic Central in 1959. The news came from Butte Lodge 239 secretary Mike Lacey at the national Elks convention in Miami.
EAST GLACIER AP A bus carrying Girl Scouts to the International Roundup in Idaho lost its brakes on Logan grade injuring five scouts. The 16-bus line carried 592 scouts from Texas Oklahoma and Louisiana. Three girls were taken to Whitefish Memorial Hospital and two by car. others shaken but not expected to need hospitalization. The mishap occurred on the west side of the Continental Divide between St Mary and West Glacier. buses were chartered from Shelby and Cut Bank districts.
Lynda Bird Johnson, the President's eldest daughter, arrived in Montana on Wednesday and headed for the Custer National Battlefield near Hardin. She traveled undercover from West Yellowstone to Billings, had supper, then departed toward the Hardin area to spend the night before continuing Thursday via Glendive for more Dakotas sightseeing.
