A 3 year old Columbia Falls boy, Ronald Lynn, was killed by a .22 caliber rifle discharge while his four year old sister handled the weapon at a home of Boyd Walker. The accident occurred as children played near the back door. no inquiry was planned. The gun’s origin remains undetermined. The family includes father Robert Lynn and mother and stepfather Mr. and Mrs. George Walker of Columbia Falls.

The Anaconda Company has built a sheltered observation platform on the southeast rim of the Berkeley Pit near Meaderville road for visitors to view the pit operations. It has drawn tourists and townspeople from across the country and abroad, with a display planned to explain depth, dimensions, and ore production. The pit is expected to reach 1,086 feet depth, have the floor 500 feet below the viewing stand, crest 586 feet above it, measure 4,600 feet by 2,700 feet, and yield about 100 million tons of ore at 0.8 percent copper.
