A Saturday night fire destroyed the Caird Engineering Works foundry in Helena. Witnesses reported two explosions around 9 p.m. and by 9:55 only two chimneys and a few beams remained as 2,000 residents watched. Firefighters prevented spread to nearby structures though a Foley Mill lumber pile burned lightly.

Montana Infant Drowns in Ditch
HAMILTON Montana 14 month old Ravalli County resident Hamil Furniss Bowen drowned Saturday afternoon in an irrigation ditch on the Stevensville family farm. Sheriff Coroner Lloyd Raymond said the ditch was two feet wide and 18 inches deep with a strong current. A doctor arrived too late. The death marked the 22nd drowning reported in Montana this year with an unofficial 1956 toll of 40.

Miles City Man Killed in Headon Collision
A headon crash on Highway 10 near Miles City killed Charles Shine about 55 and injured four others. Shine died at the scene. wife Opal and a teenage daughter were hospitalized. Pius Gross and Margaret Anderson remained hurt with fractures. The accident blocked the Cottonwood Creek bridge for over an hour and pushed state highway fatalities to 94 for the year.

Chicago Floods Subways Paralyzed Downtown After Record Rain
Runoff from the heaviest rain in Chicago history disrupted nearly half the downtown subway system. Eight people died from drownings electrocutions and heart attacks as floods swamped homes bridges hospitals and power lines. A seven month old girl, Atella Toney, drowned in a basement as waters rose.

Lake Gives Up Body of Pilot From Sawtooth Lake Crash
Jim Leonard 82 of Chico Calif died when his Navy torpedo bomber crashed into 8500 foot Sawtooth Mountain during a Spraying mission in Beaverhead National Forest. Skin divers Oscar Cook and Leo Staat recovered the body from the fuselage at Sawtooth Lake. Rescue and forest service units coordinated the recovery with aid from local residents. The wreckage remains at the lake bottom and burial plans followed the recovery.
