Tokyo signals continued skirmishes with China as cabinet pledges strong measures. Sources say Japan will reinforce north China troops to press terms from Nanking and demand withdrawal of Chinese forces, punishment of those blamed for last week’s outbreak, and suppression of anti Japanese activity.
In Washington on July 13 the House echoed Senate dissent as Rep Sumners of Texas urged a sit down on Roosevelt’s court bill. He warned the nation faces a crossroads and warned against a path to dictatorship and a split Democratic Party. The room rose as he called the bill unnecessary.
Scott Bays, 19, was killed by a knife attack while two youths paused to take photos near Quincy California. A grizzled man emerged from a thicket and declared his intent to kill before fleeing as a truck approached. Sheriff Braden organized a search with deputies along Feather river.
A Soviet transpolar monoplane, flying from Moscow, indicated it had enough fuel to reach San Diego and asked for hourly weather updates for San Diego Los Angeles and San Francisco. Intercepted near Roseburg Oregon the message suggested a possible approach to Oakland and San Francisco before attempting San Diego, with fog forecast for the arrival.
Peiping reports heavy skirmishing near Yangtingmen gate as Sino Japanese clash resumes. Trench mortar fire and machine gun fire shake the city gates remain closed and uncertain. Secretary Hull reiterates to Chinese and Japanese envoys that war would deal a heavy blow to regional stability and all efforts for peace.

Peter Paul Pierre 24 a Flathead Indian awaiting a federal trial in Missoula for the revenge killing of Lawrence Finlay saw his father Sam Pierre 75 die from injuries after a car struck him near the Flathead reservation. The elder Pierre died at St Ignatius hospital as his son prepared to confront the case in court.
The Twin Cities Scenic company of Minneapolis won the $5,770 bid for stage equipment for the new high school. The board of trustees also approved staffing for janitorial and related duties, naming George Hodge as head janitor and several other district workers.
