At the world economic conference London sessions, Britain led a revolt against Roosevelt's international public works proposal. Walter Runciman stated each nation must decide its own course and warned Britain would not participate, killing the plan in committee. Continued on page 2.
Washington dispatch reports approval by the public works board to push a large river and harbor flood control program. About 750 million already allotted for various projects while the flood control share and total size remain withheld awaiting Roosevelt's endorsement. Ickes notes possible further reductions from the War Department recommendations.
Walter Lippmann explains the world economic conference's lack of clarity. He recalls the Lausanne decision a year earlier on reparations with Germany and notes other needed actions beyond reparations for world recovery.
Dr Robert Coffey of Portland tells Montana Medical Association that grafting from a healthy donor is unlikely unless blood groups match and that cancer serums are not cures. He warns grafts cannot imitate true tissue and cites the knife X ray and radium as main cancer remedies. He notes rising deaths from cancer heart and kidney diseases while praising board restrictions on admission to practice.
Washington July 13 Predictions that President Roosevelt would drop his plan to place all postmasters under civil service were voiced as Congress debated patronage and motives. Senator McKellar led opposition toRemoving first second and third class postmasters from patronage while Roosevelt pushes civil service reforms and efficiency.
The Butte Electric railway hosts ten local youngsters on a weekly outing to Columbia Gardens. The trip, postponed from yesterday due to the circus, will depart at the usual time with free rides until 1 33 p m. Return trips begin at 1 33 p m and run to 6 p m. Trained attendants will supervise the children.
In Anaconda the Montana Medical association elected Dr C F K Vidal superintendent of the state sanitarium at Galen as president elect for next year. Dr W E Longo and E G Balsam were named officers and delegates were chosen as part of the two day convention. Helena will host the next gathering.
Klondike Kate the Yukon era dance hall star says she will wed John Matson in Vancouver and return to Alaska to live. She recalled Christmas Eve 1900 in Dawson and noted her past link to Alexander Pantages. Kate Rockwell, once of Bend Oregon, travels toward Vancouver for the ceremony.
Oil and coal men, general contractors and clothing manufacturers rush to file emergency codes. Johnson aims to extend 40 hour weeks and higher wages to textile rivals to match $12 and $13 minimums effective for cotton mills. Hearings set July 20 cover oil, lumber, and cloak and suit divisions as agreements move toward effect.
Former Texas Governor Jim Ferguson told President Roosevelt that Texas would join states voting to repeal prohibition. Florida Governor Dave Shultz organized a repeal election for October 10, bringing the tally to 35 states with ballots assured this year. Ferguson said the president is hopeful repeal will succeed and that Texas will vote to repeal.
W. H. Bartley of Miles City Montana has been appointed acting deputy prohibition administrator for Montana. The report notes Bartley a prominent Democrat and railroad man. Sixteen states have voted to ratify the repeal amendment with several others set to vote in coming weeks and months.
Statewide finances show two year appropriations exceeding income by over 1.2 million dollars. In Butte a large turnout has enrolled for a free girls camp at Columbia Gardens sponsored by Camp Fire under Mrs H D Kistler. Girls aged 10 to 16 may register on Bay Fm if possible at Camp Helena.
EUTAV, Ala July 13 George Kotsonaros Greek wrestler based in Los Angeles and famed for throwing Jim Londos in recent years died instantly when his car overturned near here. John Paul Jones of Houston Texas riding with Kotsonaros was injured but not seriously. Ben Hardin of Montana Hardware mourned the loss of his old friend.
Cooler weather reached eastern Montana while western regions remained hot. No rain eased crop and range dry spells. Billings fell from 100 to 90 and Miles City from 92 to 88, with Havre and Kalispell also cooler though Still hot outlook for Butte.
In Forsyth a three-year-old boy, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. E. Scott of Bismarck North Dakota, fell from a second story hotel window onto the pavement. A slight elbow scratch and bruises were the only injuries. The child was released from a hospital today.
A twelve juror panel will retire today in Judge T E Downeys court to determine the guilt or innocence of Mrs Sungkum Jo in the September 3 slaying of Y H Chang. Final arguments follow the agreement on 47 jury instructions and Miss Lillian Temby testified in rebuttal while Dr A R Sievers described Mrs Jo as unable to distinguish right from wrong under anxiety.
The Mumalo children Lewis and Rose aged 10 and 8 were treated for cuts after a popping bottle exploded. Stranded miles from the circus they left from at 2422 Farrel Street, hospital staff alerted city authorities, and Officer James Mooney arrived with the Black Mafia to provide transport back to the circus.
Montana forecast calls for generally fair skies on Friday and Saturday with little change in temperatures. No significant precipitation is expected and conditions remain mild across the region.
Civic clubs labor unions and business groups back the push to keep the Butte public library open by any means. A mass meeting is set for 8 oclock at the Fox theater with P J Geraghty as chair. Dr Curtis L Wilson says closing the library would be a serious blow to Butte and a tragedy for local youth.
