Post Department Plans Saturday Delivery Curtailments

The Post Department will end Saturday and Sunday window service at first and second class offices starting July 27 with general delivery windows limited to two hours. It also plans to close 250 fourth class post offices on August 2 and 97 more on August 30, shifting rural delivery and reducing vacancies to cut payroll costs under a new tax bill.

Olsen seeks to stop mail delivery cuts in Congress

Montana Representative Arnold Olsen urged Congress to exempt the Post Office from budget cuts that would threaten mail service. FBI investigates Potlatch Idaho bank burglary

John W. Burns of the FBI Montana Idaho Division said agents are probing the Thursday burglary at the Idaho First National Bank in Potlatch. Entry came from an adjacent business into the main vault, with several safety boxes looted and tellers coinage taken. paper money in a separate safe was spared. Loss estimate awaits determination.

Montana Prison officials reply in Cheadle case

The five Montana state prison officials deny all charges in Janet Sirrine’s amended complaint over Larry Cheadle’s death at Deer Lodge on October 31, 1966. They say Cheadle was incorrigible and that the disciplinary cell was necessary and lawful. Ellsworth says he was out of state when the death occurred. The suit seeks 205000 in damages. Delta jet hijack thwarted by crew in Miami landing

A Delta Airlines flight from Philadelphia to Houston was hijacked at gunpoint by a man claiming cancer. The crew persuaded him to surrender in Miami where police took him into custody. Senator William Eastland was aboard and questioned by the FBI. The pilot Forest Dines led the disarming effort as the plane diverted to Miami.

Final rodeo night sets Championship bids in Butte

The 37th annual Butte rodeo crowns Winter Championship honors and prize money tonight at 9 p.m. with top cowboys chasing $3,500 plus added entry in a thrill filled event. New 10 Percent Tax Surcharge Effective July 14

The Internal Revenue Service sets July 14 as the effective date for the 10 percent surcharge on individual income tax withholding.
