South Viet Nam reports nine missiles and two MIG21 fighters engaged Monday in an effort to halt increased U.S. air strikes on North Viet Nam. The Communist action comes as raids continue to escalate in the region.
About 200 people, mostly Black, clash with police on the Southwest Side after authorities shut off hydrants. Eight arrests, store and car breakages, injuries reported, four hospitalized with cuts and bruises amid a tense night.
President Johnson urged China to renounce aggressions and engage with the outside world in a first major statement on China described as a firm yet flexible policy. He warned of a prolonged Viet Nam war while calling for peaceful coexistence to foster a prosperous Asia.
The machinists union halted negotiations with Northwest Airlines accusing the carrier of violating an agreement by forcing striking workers in Tokyo to pay back rent and bills. The walkout ends any chance of early settlement as Eastern United Trans World and National also strike. Layoffs follow, with Eastern laying off 12,000 non striking employees and the Civil Aeronautics Board urging public cooperation amid crowded flights and multiple reservations.
Paul Cannon, 68, fired as motor vehicle supervisor for the Montana Railroad and Public Service Commission, left Helena for Butte without a promised statement. He had held the $7,000-a-year job since June 1964 and said he would issue a statement later.
About 70 cast and crew members begin rehearsals at the Butte Civic Center for Holiday on Ice of 1966 with a planned Aug. 7 to 9 premiere. Ed Leary notes $200000 in expenses for rehearsals and showtime. The board of county commissioners provided the venue for $4000, via Bagdad Temple sponsorship.
Robert T. Pantzer a 51 year old lawyer and UM financial vice president was chosen by the Board of Regents to become acting president of the 73 year old Montana University System campus at Missoula. Pantzer will take the reins August 15 as President Johns leaves to head Sacramento State College. The regents will seek a replacement through a screening committee Gov. Babcock appointed with UM officials and regents on the panel. Pantzer born June 18 1915 in Sheboygan Wis is a UM graduate and has served the university since 1948 one of its key financial officers.
In Mining City today, Montana fish and game commissioners join Pacific Flyway Council members for the Western Association conference opening in Butte. They oppose raising the duck stamp to five dollars and the two dollar dove stamp funds. Governor Babcock and Mayor Powers headline opening events as visitors gather for the August Las Vegas meeting.
Page 9 reports a weekend event featuring state retriever trials drawing local crowds. Page 14 notes a retired Army officer has been arrested on spy charges, with details pending.

Frank Ruffato aged 17 and James Brown 16 from California ran away from the Anaconda Job Corps camp early Tuesday. They surrendered to Butte police later that day and said homesickness, not trouble, drove them to leave. Ruffato, from near San Bernardino, did forestry work while Brown dug fencepost holes. They arrived by air last Wednesday and mention a recent fight but deny involvement.
