Clarke Beach reports the Senate set a Monday vote on a World Rehabilitation and Relief package. The initiative faces a price tag exceeding 20 billion dollars for U S support measures and international aid programs.
Gov Thomas E Dewey drew attention at the Salt Lake conference of governors as he sought to balance private campaigning for the 1948 Republican nomination with duties at the annual gathering. Utah Republicans and neighboring state leaders discussed support, while Secretary Marshall was set to speak, fueling debates on party strategies and potential vice presidential selections.
Kalispell resident C H Brewer was elected president of the Montana Municipal League at its Saturday convention in Billings. Desmond J O Neill of Glendive became first vice president with J R Wine Jr of Helena as third vice president. M J Mee of Anaconda was secretary and W N Kessler of Helena treasurer. A central office, staffed by a legally trained person, was approved to improve service for member cities, with funding from higher dues. The league also backed a planned school at Montana State College to train sewage and waterworks operators.
Denver report says a four passenger plane crashed in an East Denver street shortly after takeoff on an emergency flight to Rochester Minnesota. Pilot George Mayfield suffered minor cuts while passengers Carl Taussig Harold Taus sig and Warren Taus sig were unhurt.
British officials accuse Egypt of seeking to break the 1936 Anglo Egyptian treaty to assert control over the Sudan. They say Cairo demands UN Security Council action for a total immediate withdrawal of British forces, while Cadogan may seek to dismiss the Egyptian complaint as unjust. Talks on revising the treaty stalled over Sudan's future status.
Butte Development association expects 14 or more low cost houses to begin within a week in the Grand Avenue addition. The water main extension by Butte Water Co enables service for 31 houses in the area with plans for 100 homes this summer and possible 70 more sites. The first test home nears completion while Locust street houses use pumice block and 15 others on Silver Bow and Elm streets will be frame structures.
Butte residents push a special election to authorize a bond financed civic center and athletic field project. Walter Barnard urges petition signings as 3,500 names are sought to place the measure on the ballot. The plan covers 25 acres east of Harrison facing Silver Bow creek with a lighted turf field for football and basketball. The Chamber of Commerce young men sponsor the drive led by Paul Golden.
Montana's gasoline tax receipts for the first six months of 1947 totaled $3,810,199, up 43 percent from 1946 and 50 percent from 1945. Refunds to non high way users were $641,946, a 15 percent rise, leaving net revenue of $3,168,253, 22 percent higher than a year ago.
Partly cloudy Sunday with scattered showers and warm readings. In Butte area temperatures rose to 81 in the last day with 36 low, and forecast highs near 80. Montana shows fair morning, then partly cloudy with afternoon thunderstorms, highs from 75 to 90.
A total of 282000 has been pledged toward building a New Central High School for Girls in Butte. D M Kelly of Anaconda Copper Mining company chairs the campaign with support from the community and clergy. The goal remains 400000 as parish and central committees push to finish district assignments and complete remaining contacts.
James H. McMahon, once a Montana School of Mines student and office boy at the Montana Standard, helped develop atomic bomb design during the Manhattan Project and now teaches metallurgical engineering at MIT. He expects a PhD, believes Russia may have bombs within five years, and plans a U S tour before returning to Cambridge. His hometown visit rekindled old ties with former colleagues and family.
FBI arrested Alexander Von Der Luft of Mt. Lebanon Pennsylvania and Earnest D. Wallis of Chicago for allegedly removing and concealing atomic documents from Los Alamos New Mexico in 1946. The men face federal charges under section 234 of the criminal code.
Republican sponsors failed to push through a 4 billion dollar income tax cut during a lengthy Senate session. Democratic and Republican leaders then agreed to a Monday vote, amid forecasts of a presidential veto within 10 days. Eight Morse amendments were defeated as the chamber recessed after nearly ten hours of debate.
Paris reports Britain France and Italy told the opening session that Russia and eastern European nations would be welcome to aid European recovery under the Marshall plan. Bevin said the conference won’t create a rival to the United Nations and pledged Commonwealth resources to rehabilitation. A working committee began studying a British French draft for European recovery with American aid.
Former Capitol police officer William L Kaiser fired two pistol shots at Senator Bricker during a brief Saturday incident on Capitol Hill. Bricker escaped unharmed with aide J. H. Macomber and subway operator Jerry Albright. Kaiser, arrested hours later on assault with intent to kill, claimed he acted to refresh Bricker’s memory.
Benny Cleveland Los Angeles bantam weight boxer died at Presbyterian hospital after collapsing in his dressing room following a Friday night defeat to Rob Adams. A brain operation by Dr R B Ramey failed to prevent his deteriorating condition.
Butte's birth statistics show 95 babies born in June and 609 for the first six months of the year, signaling a record run that could top all eight year totals. June's births included 53 boys and 46 girls, with March the peak month at 120, and two months showing equal gender splits. Delayed registrations for birth certificates fell after wartime peaks, with 98 last year.
