News from Peiping reports shells bursting over the walls as Chinese 29th route army troops clash with Japanese reinforcements just south of the city. Heavy casualties are reported on both sides as Tokyo authorities summon prefectural governors to discuss the crisis.
Montana's 1937 wheat crop is forecast at 27,286,000 bushels in the July crop report by Jay G. Diamond. The figure is more than double 1936, with 840,000 tons of sugar beets also predicted and livestock feeds greatly improved. June rains boosted yields though drought in the northeast signals possible crop failures. irrigation looks promising and western fruit prospects show three-year bests. The report is the first official glimpse into fall harvest prospects.
Senator Bailey denounces the court reorganization bill as unconstitutional during a tense Senate session. He accuses the measure of aiming to control Supreme Court decisions, shouting that no constitutional sanction supports such an objective. The exchange followed remarks by Senator Mahoney of Wyoming.
Police and National Guardsmen sealed I O headquarters Massillon Ohio and barred picket lines after a clash with strikers left two dead and fifteen injured including three patrolmen. The violence comes as Republic reopens last closed plants and Sheet & Tube prepares Indiana Harbor works to restart with 7,700 employees. Governor Townsend refused state protection, saying all pickets were withdrawn. President Argetsinger of Sheet & Tube said no agreement with the S W O C. was reached. Republic units in Pittsburgh and Canton reopened without incident.
About 200 merchants and druggists gathered in Butte for the fifth annual Associated Merchants of Montana convention and the fourth annual Montana State Pharmaceutical Association session. Leaders Lambert Eliel and George McFarland preside as speakers outline fair trade law implications. Key talks include John W. Bonner on fair trade workings and Dr. Francis A. Thomson on mining and business relations.

In Missoula on July 12 a Washington car suspected as the hit and run vehicle in the death of Donald O. Palmer near Garrison was ruled a dud after patrolmen found the car had earlier struck a deer. The driver’s name was withheld by the officer.
Harry W. Colmery national commander of the American Legion will arrive in Butte by airplane Saturday night for an official Montana visit. He will be greeted at the airport by state officials and depart for Great Falls by chartered plane for a banquet. A radio message to Montana veterans is planned and he will return to Butte the next morning for further engagements.
Gen. Hugh S. Johnson calls reports he may run for Oklahoma governor a fishing expedition. He says every trip to Oklahoma provokes suspicion of political motives and dismisses the rumors as unfounded.
President Roosevelt declared the government will insist on greater application of the Golden Rule by corporations and business enterprises in their relations to the public. The address accompanied the dedication of a new project as GNP and policy aims were outlined during a return visit in Butte. Robert E. Dwyer of Anaconda Copper Mining and family were in Butte en route to visit relatives after a Banff Lake Louise trip.
Mrs. Margaret Kaiser a Berlin newspaperwoman reports Europe is not headed for war. She cites food scarcity as a reason war is unlikely and notes Hitler’s regime focused on employing and stabilizing Germany's middle class. Kaiser, visiting the United States since December, lauds the West and discusses her research in local mines and libraries.

The Lexington aircraft carrier prepares for a major search as Amelia Earhart’s route is narrowed to Howland Island. Flying decks and lookouts are ready. Weather worsens with rain squalls limiting visibility. 50-50 chances of locating the plane persist.
City street oiling stopped by a court injunction and may resume later this week as officials reported. County officials prepared a motion for a rehearing in the State Supreme Court today. county officers left for the capital. The court ordered a writ restraining the county surveyor from street work, but officials said no writ had been served. City Attorney Floyd C. Flanet said no copy of the decision had been received yet.
