Five Die When Plane Crashes Near Reading
Five men were killed and a sixth injured critically on a Transcontinental and Western Air routine training flight near Reading Pennsylvania. The aircraft, a Const el lation transport, crashed into an alfalfa field three miles north of Reading around 12 40 p m Eastern. Only Nilsen and Brown survived the wreckage. The crew included First Officers Herrien Amthor and Brown, Captain Nilsen, Engineer Stauffer, and Captain Brown was thrown clear. Amthor was aboard for an instrument check prior to takeoff. The crash is described by TWA as the first fatal crash of a commercially owned Constellation in regular service. Firefighters extinguished the flames nine minutes after impact. Still Explodes Three Injured Damages Distillery Near Ripon
Three people were injured when a flaming brandy blast at the Schenley Coronet distillery near Ripon California touched off a two acre fire. The Administration building and other structures were damaged. 10000 gallons of barrelled brandy 10000 tons of grapes and 2500 gallons of high proof alcohol were destroyed. Firefighters from Ripon and Manteca controlled the blaze after several hours. The cause remained undetermined.
