Three Soviet airmen led by Mihail Gromov launched a single engine monoplane from Shehelmore airport near Moscow at 3 25 a m. Their plan to cross the north pole route and fly toward the Pacific coast could set a new distance record surpassing 5657 miles. The crew includes Major Andre Yumashev navigator and Sergei Daniline co pilot.
