The Republican National Convention in Chicago adopts a 1952 platform denouncing the Truman administration and outlining a path for free men to a new day. The 6,000 words will guide GOP speakers, with civil rights debates yielding no floor changes and party divisions quieted.
Briton William Marshall a 24 year old foreign office radio operator was sentenced to five years in prison for passing British secrets to the Russians and recording secret diplomatic radio calls. He proclaimed innocence as Judge Sir Patrick Barry noted leniency due to youth and a clean record.
Six people were injured in a two car collision half a mile south of Deer Lodge on Thursday night. Maurice Sivertson and Ed Larson both suffered very critical injuries at St Joseph hospital. Carl Sivertson drove the northbound car. James M O Rourke of Dubuque Iowa, in the other vehicle, was treated and released. his wife and mother were admitted with cuts and bruises.
UN troops with tanks attacked three hills northwest of Chorwon on the western front and engaged in a bitter one hour action before withdrawing. Eighth Army says raiding units returned to base, one damaged tank recovered. Chinese forces were repelled west of the Pukhan river on the eastern front following a heavy artillery barrage.
About 25 000 residents gathered before city hall to denounce the Soviet kidnaping of anti-Communist attorney Dr Walter Linse. Police faced violence as hecklers clashed with demonstrators, with officers assaulted and stripped, while workmen erected barricades on the Soviet border to curb further abductions.
Butte will have clear to partly cloudy skies Friday and Friday night with scattered thundershowers in the afternoon and night. The United States Britain and France proposed to meet with Russia to form an impartial commission to judge whether free elections can occur in divided Germany. Moscow would need to accept free elections in the Soviet zone and a free German government in peace talks, with the panel granted access across Germany. The note criticized Soviet moves-to unify via Berlin and East German measures that hinder contact with western Germans.
In Pittsburgh on July 10, CIO United Steel Workers and industry leaders met in a secret session to gauge cooperation on securing iron ore for next winter. No progress reported. a union spokesman said another meeting is planned Friday as 23,000 ore miners’ sympathy strike looms over a 39 day steel dispute.
A potential stoppage of Sabre jet fighter production in Korea was averted when the CIO United Auto Workers and North American Aviation Inc of Los Angeles agreed to binding arbitration of their contract dispute.
A severe thunderstorm struck Butte around 7:30 p m causing widespread power outages. More than 4 500 rodeo fans at the Civic Center lost service, a drive in theater burned a fuse box, and an intercity baseball game was halted with Butte leading 11 to 3 in the eighth inning. The storm cooled an 87 degree heat wave and the weather outlook called for more showers Friday with similar temperatures.
Mrs. C. Edward Howard of Excelsior Minnesota praised Harold E Stassen for his Minnesota governorship and Navy service. She argued his world view and leadership could unite the Republican Party and extend Minnesotas educational citizenship program to the nation.
The Michigan delegation to the Republican national convention voted on the first nominating ballot to give 34 votes to Dwight D. Eisenhower and 12 to Robert A. Taft. With 46 votes total, Michigan had been the last large bloc not committed to a major rival or a favorite son.
Sen. Estes Kefauver of Tennessee, frontrunner for the Democratic nomination, accused the Republican platform of neglecting labor and labeling it the forgotten man as AFL CTU and others denounced the platform as anti labor. He spoke in Illinois and predicted a fifth or sixth ballot win at Chicago starting July 21, with Sen. Richard Russell seen as a strong opponent. In Washington Russell praised the President and his chances for the nomination.
The Department of Agriculture projects crop production at 132 percent of the 1923-32 average for 1952 based on July 1 conditions. Corn is 3.365 billion bushels, wheat 1.249 billion, potatoes 339 million, with rice likely to set a production record. Weather favored corn and winter grains but spring sown crops suffered. barley remains the smallest since 1936.
Gen Douglas MacArthur was put in nomination at the Republican national convention as the party's presidential nominee. Former Gov Fred L Coogan praised him as one of Americas greatest sons and a master statesman while declaring his faith and leadership.

Sen. Everett C. Dirksen nominated Sen. Robert A. Taft for the Republican ticket on Thursday night and Gov. Thomas E. Dewey of New York walked out with no immediate explanation given.
