President Roosevelt asks Congress for 4.85 billion dollars in additional Army and Navy funding, pledging no American troops for European wars while committing to repel aggression in the Western Hemisphere. He notes strong opposition to war and outlines a total defense strategy as the nation braces for looming conflict.
The President’s defense plea and pledge of no draft to foreign shores drew praise for Montana Senator Burton K. Wheeler. Wheeler said the president’s stance ensures a strong peace plank and a united Democratic Party backing Roosevelt’s leadership and potential third term.
The Senate approved a bill authorizing the two ocean Navy to begin planning for a large fleet and modern weapons. The measure, which passed the House previously, carries no funds yet and awaits larger appropriations. Senator Connally said the plan ensures capability to confront Europe if needed.
Rolland O. Smith a 15 year old native of Butte and son of Mr and Mrs J P Smith 411 East Broadway was fatally injured in a three car collision at Texas avenue and Elm street shortly after 4 yesterday afternoon His mother among seven others was seriously hurt and confined to bed at home Police say Wayne Fox 17 of the Butte airport drove a car that struck the Smith vehicle causing a second car to overturn and a third to be struck He died after being rushed to St James hospital.
The House approved the Hatch clean state politics bill by 243 to 122, extending the ban on partisan activity to state workers funded wholly or partly from federal funds. It now goes to the Senate for concurrence with House amendments after a pitched fight led by supporters and opposed by Hatton Sumner.
Chicago July 10 President Roosevelt's third term plans dominated Democratic preconvention chatter with a large majority predicting he would run again. Chicago Mayor Edward J. Kelly and Indiana's Frank McHale urged a renomination while Postmaster General James A Farley denied any change in his status.
Electrical storm sparks twelve fires across Deer Lodge National Forest over two days. CCC workers and forest service crews fought a large blaze on Powder Creek ten miles southwest of Butte, with smoke visible from the city. Additional fires occurred in the Whitehall district.
H C Timberlake from the ninth federal reserve district says Montana merchants expect a volume of business this year equal to or above 1939. He reports broad optimism after talks with retailers across the state and notes his tour will include Helena and other cities while banks and firms in the district supply data for the monthly agricultural and business review.

The Butte Press club invited Republican Wendell Wilkie and the Democratic standard bearers to make one day stops in Butte during their campaign tours. The club held a dinner meeting at the Moxom cafe last night to extend the invitations.
The tenth annual Butte rodeo opens tonight at 8 under floodlights with a strong lineup of world champion cowboys, steer riders, bull doggers and calf ropers. Many entrants are past champions, while several are competing here for the first time, promising one of the circuit’s best shows. The event runs the next three evenings with a matinee Saturday for youngsters.
London reports a massive air fight over England with Britain’s defenses on edge after Sir Edward Grigg warned of a potential dawn attack. British planes and coastal guns repelled the raid, dowing or disabling 37 raiders. MPs debate the warning as a call for vigilance.
Munich reports say Adolf Hitler and Rome Berlin axis ministers blocked Hungary from dismembering Romania. Premier Teleky and Hungary’s foreign minister Csuky were told to deny claims and avoid upsetting the Balkan balance as Germany and Italy seek to control Balkan resources for a new European order. Russia’s move into Romania is viewed as a Western limit on revision in the region.
The Gold Hill Lutheran church at 934 Placer Street will dedicate Sunday at 10 30 in the morning with Rev Theodore P Neste presiding. Rt Rev A M Skinlov of Spokane will give the dedicatory address with Rev B R Jacobson Rev Leonard Thompson Rev Warren Strain and Rev Neste as assistants. Arthur Drynan will lead the choir and Ralph Godtland will be organist. A Faith in Action program follows at 3 pm.
