Reagan May Enter Race Next Month

Montana western states coordinator Frank Whetstone says Ronald Reagan will announce his presidential bid at the Republican Convention in Miami next month. Butte Vigilante Rodeo Opens With 6500 In Prizes

The Butte Vigilante Rodeo opens Thursday through Saturday with about 6500 in prize money and entry fees. Shawn Davis of Whitehall seeks a big haul after recovering from a broken jaw while ranking third in saddle bronc and eighth all around. Events include saddle and bareback bronc riding bull riding calf roping steer wrestling with arena capacity 4600 at Vigilante grounds. Tickets on sale today at noon with out of town demand noted from Montana and other states.

Compromise gun bill heads to House floor

Butte tops 86 on Tuesday for this year’s high while 1967 reached 90 on Sept 5 and dropped to 48 a week later. Weather forecasters expect a cooling trend to begin Sunday or Monday with a chance of rain.

Viet Cong repulsed west of Saigon in dawn clash

About 200 Viet Cong probing outer defenses five miles west of Saigon were repulsed by South Vietnamese forces in marshy plains. An American Crusader jet from the carrier Ticonderoga shot down a North Vietnamese MIG 17. Elsewhere Viet Cong mortars shelled Tay Ninh City and Bien Hoa as ground fighting remained scattered. A Riverside woman, Petra Martinez Gordino, died at age reported 116 after residing in Corona since 1909.

Frankie McDonald Butte Entertainer Dies at 83

Frances Dillon McDonald 83 of 843 Lewisohn widow of Thomas L. McDonald died Monday night in a local hospital after months of ill health. Known as Frankie in Butte she was a popular musician who began violin at age six and performed with Artist Life Concert Co. She played at the Orpheum Theater accompanying silent films and graduated from St Patrick School in 1902. Continued on page 2.

Forest fires in Northern Region under control Tuesday night

Fire danger index rises slightly as hot dry weather continues. In Montana a 710 acre Seeley Lake fire was contained by 520 men and 11 bulldozers after it started Sunday and ran lines Monday night. Seven new fires emerged in the region with three man caused and four lightning. all under one quarter acre.
