After 25 years and 35 000 letters, 80 year old Mom De Marranza continues sending mail to soldiers. She began with a letter to her son in the Pacific after Pearl Harbor and has persisted through Vietnam. Now aging and nearly blind she keeps mailing despite dwindling income.
Washington scientists report that the Mitral valve, long viewed as passive, contains heart muscle fibers, blood vessels, and nerves and can contract. The finding may shed light on rheumatic fever damage and suggest new treatment ideas, based on studies in cat, dog, and human hearts.
