Six people including two infants drowned in the San Joaquin River near Modesto when a human chain slipped under swif t muddy waters at an isolated swimming area. R E Thomas of Community Memorial Hospital and Don Brunell of Walkerville were injured when a gas explosion and ensuing fire leveled a one and a half story house at 11 Rose Walkerville. Thomas, tending a cement porch when gas smelled, said a flash knocked him down. Brunell, a Walkerville Volunteer Fire Department member, was admitted to St. James Hospital in good condition.
