French aviator Mermoz forced to land seaplane in Atlantic
In Rio de Janeiro on July 9 a delayed effort by Jean Mermoz to prove a practical transatlantic air mail service failed when engine trouble forced the giant seaplane to land on the Atlantic about 300 miles from Dakar. The mail remained intact and a Phocce steamer towed the craft toward port while a fast dispatch boat was sent. The mail will be transferred at Dakar for Europe. A faulty oil line caused the forced landing.
