The Montana Board of Education relinquished any claim to jewelry in the estate of Dr Peter Potter, a Butte civic leader and long-time Murray Hospital staffer. Potters will left a loan fund of about $73,000 for Butte High School graduates to attend the University of Montana, and the board asked the attorney general to prepare a formal opinion.
Montana and three neighboring states weigh building a two year or four year medical school under the WICHE compact. Montana argues for a two year option to cut costs while recognizing needs for general practitioners in small towns. Faulkner projects costs from 14 to 35 million and notes regional sharing may be required.
Dr. Herbert L. Steele of Billings is named chairman of the Council of Presidents of the University of Montana. He succeeds Dr. Edwin G. Koch of Butte, president of Montana School of Mines since April 1957. Steele, head of Eastern Montana College since 1957, will organize meetings to set policy on charitable funds and an accreditation education program.
The Standard Post analyzes Butte's new zoning ordinance with a public hearing set for Wednesday night July 17 at City Hall. It outlines 10 district types including rural and high density residential, local and transient commercial, central and general commercial, and light and heavy industrial. Reno police said Louis Charles Rauschkolb 52 a San Francisco cab driver was held for investigation as one of five men sought by Secret Service in a ring that printed 4 million dollars in counterfeit money on a college press in California. Another arrest was Clarence Junior Richards 41 of Butte Montana on counterfeiting charges bound over to District Court on 2500 bond after attempting to pass a 50 bill. Richards also used the name William Knofel.
Final plans for construction at three Montana University System units were approved by the Board of Regents. Bids will be opened this month or next by the new State Department of Administration. Projects include a 400000 dollar men’s residence hall at Western Montana College of Education, an addition and basement completion at Northern Montana College, and a basement remodel at Montana State University for a computer center.
Rival lion dancer groups fought with knives and clubs over spectator donations at a temple festival in Yunlin County Formosa. Police restored order. two dancers were killed and three injured. Four dancers were arrested. participants wore papier mache or cloth lion costumes and performed for pay.
President Kennedy summoned both railroad factions to the White House for a last chance session at 10:30 am EDT on Tuesday to avert a strike set to begin 12:01 am Thursday. White House secretary Pierre Salinger called the gathering an obvious last-ditch effort as unions push back against featherbedding while labor seeks protection against a walkout. Postmaster General Day warned that first class and air mail would continue during a possible strike, with other mail restricted.

The Independence Day weekend saw at least 556 traffic deaths, an all time high for the holiday. The four day period from 6 p.m. Wednesday to midnight Sunday far surpassed the prior 509 fatalities set in 1961.
Butte downtown plumbing work is at a standstill as the Butte Plumbers Union strikes against the Master Plumbers Association. The dispute centers on wage increases, with the union seeking 25 cents more per hour in three steps and the association offering 12 cents in three steps.
The Montana Optometric Association warns viewers to use eye protection during the July 20 solar eclipse. Viewing with naked eye or through scopes or sunglasses risks retinal injury. Dr. J C Sullivan of Butte suggests neutral density filters or a pinhole viewing method with careful construction and positioning.
Federal Judge George Boldt approved a $1 million out of court settlement of 55 civil damage suits against 28 electrical equipment manufacturers. The suits, linked to anti trust prosecutions of 1961, were brought by Pacific Power and Light Portland Idaho Power Boise Montana Power and Eugene Water and Electric Board. The agreement covers damages to utilities and aims to resolve about 1,800 similar suits nationwide.
Margaret Williams 88 of Maxville died at State Hospital Galen after a three year illness. Funeral services Thursday at 2 p.m. Wilson Funeral Home Philipsburg Cemetery burial. Born October 9 1874 Henderson Gulch Mont raised in Maxville. Survived by brother Tom Hennessy of Galen two nieces and one nephew.
