Butte V Rodeo to Pay Record 11000 Prize Money

About 11 000 in prize money will be paid to the best of 206 contestants in Butte s 40th annual Vigilante Rodeo and Saddle Club rodeo. The three night run opens Thursday at 8 p m in the outdoor arena on Butte s South Side. Entries closed with 54 bull riders and 205 total competitors, the most ever.

Union offer under study in labor talks

Negotiations between Anaconda Co. and the United Steelworkers Union recessed after 30 minutes to review a counter proposal addressing pensions wages a productivity clause and hospitalization insurance Federal mediator Carl J Clavadetscher attended while Anaconda officials mull the offer The unions cited a four point package including the productivity clause which Anaconda says could grant broad control over job assignments and threaten seniority and transfers.

Jury Deliberations Pause in Dunham Case

After five hours the jury in the Dunham Partin case asked to be locked for the night. Deliberations resume today as the nine women and three men consider five counts accusing Sherman Act violations and Hobbs Act extortion tied to a Plaquemine sewer project in 1968.

House approves curb on mailing sex oriented material

The House backed a bill to curb mailing of sex oriented material to homes and to alter the Supreme Court obscenity standard. It would remove the social interest test and align federal law with a New York guideline defining nudity and sexual conduct as obscene. Utility hearing slated Aug 23 in Helena

The Public Service Commission set August 23 for the opening of a public hearing on Montana Power Co. rate requests. The proposal would raise natural gas rates by 33.8 percent for a typical five room home and electric rates by 18.5 percent, totaling a $6.47 monthly increase or 26.6 percent. Annual revenue would rise by about $17 million to $103.1 million.

Move to annex area eyed for Butte city limits expansion

City Council Wednesday night moved to annex the Butte Plaza shopping center Ramada Inn and other parcels east of Harrison including Moran s trailer court Leipheimer s service station the Union 76 Libee Circle K White Swan and Burritt Animal Hospital. Mayor Mike Micone said the expansion aims to broaden services and tax base amid Silver Bow County residents who feel part of Butte. The plan follows a seven year gap since the last aborted attempt tied to Race Track residents. Census data show 23 368 in city limits and 41 981 in the county with about 18 300 in the county outside city limits.

Prosecutor argues 18 year old was railroaded into prison

Howard Freeman told the state parole board Ira Leighton now 47 was railroaded in a 1943 murder trial that sent him to prison for 99 years for the death of Lawrence County Sheriff Cleve Weathers. Freeman said his family and two other attorneys were special prosecutors and that the trial was unfair. He said his dying father is ashamed of the prosecution and he regrets his role. Leighton testified the sheriff entered a cell with a blackjack and beat him, and that the sheriff was there to beat a prisoner up. The 18 year old should not have been convicted.

Missionaries slain in Dominican Republic compound

Two American Baptist missionaries, Paul Potter 39 and Nancy Potter 36 from Marshfield Missouri, were found beaten and stabbed in their Santiago home. Their car carried anti foreigner and anti Yankee graffiti. Police ruled out robbery as motive. their 10 year old son David discovered the bodies.

Steel talks stall as union and industry seek wage pact

Labor Department and Federal Mediation said no government action planned as steel talks continue with both sides avoiding public announcements. About 350,000 workers at nine firms face contracts expiring August 1, with pattern impacts for 190,000 more. Deer Lodge voters to decide $13,000 school levy
