Traffic deaths rose during the Independence Day holiday period but the National Safety Council remained cautiously optimistic that the final toll would be lower than last year. The 479 deaths occurred on the final day of the four day holiday, with 43 boating and 136 non boating drownings recorded.

East German border guards opened fire on two apparent refugees trying to cross the Berlin Wall. The first shooting occurred Saturday night near the Brandenburg Gate injuring a man about 40. Police in Sydney confront Wally Mellish the former mental patient who holds a girl and her infant son hostage. The siege escalated after Mellish demanded an armor piercing rifle to feel equal to officers. Mellish has threatened to kill hostages and police if forced to surrender, while authorities attempt talks and staged gestures to coax surrender.

Erick V. Johnson 84 a former state representative and Flint Creek Valley rancher died Sunday at Granite County Hospital. Services are planned Wednesday at Wilson Funeral Home Philipsburg with burial in Philipsburg Cemetery. He served as vice president and director of the Flint Creek Valley Bank at his death. He was born November 18 1883 in Persmala Neylro Sweden and came to the United States at 17.
