Pittsburgh reports the national steel strike continues with 650000 idle workers and 900 per cent production halt. The strike spreads to 50000 furloughed workers, while Pennsylvanias railroad cuts schedules for 7000 nonunion staff reducing payroll by 10 percent.
Dr. Bernard C. Kingsbury of San Francisco and Dr. Harold Hillenbrand of Chicago will attend a testimonial dinner in the Finlen Hotel in Butte in July honoring Dr. C. S. Renouard. Renouard, a longtime Butte dentist and ADA board member, is recognized for service to the Montana Third District Dental Society and the American Dental Assn. activities.
Nassau detectives said the second call from the kidnapper came Friday promising further contact but no message has followed. The ransom rose from 2000 to 5000 dollars and the caller urged public notices in media. Church groups offered safe spaces for the child while the suspect left a coded signature in the ransom note. The Weinbergers await another contact as police pursue leads.

Nearby at Wolf Point Laurins Ausmonis a 29 year old Latvian displaced farmer was killed in a pickup car collision near an airport. Coroner Lyman Clayton plans no inquest.
Victor Fernandez 22 in lower Manhattan foils a fall catching Edwin Talavera 7 who tumbled from a third story bedroom window. The child weighed 49 pounds and escaped injury due to the quick reflexes.
French authorities report 29 Moslem Nationalist rebels killed in three clashes west of Algiers. No French casualties listed and rebel reports remain unavailable since the revolt began in the eastern mountains over 20 months ago.
Senator Goldwater predicts the Republican National Convention will reject any effort to drop Vice President Nixon from the ticket. He says no organized opposition exists and Nixon remains highly popular with Republican workers. Carlson and Allott echoed low expectations of a challenge, noting only talk of replacing Nixon but predicting his nomination will stand.

U S District Judge Rubey M Hulen who presided over the conspiracy trial of former Truman officials died on an operating table after being shot in his yard hours after being found by a gardener. The two defendants Matthew J Connelly and T Lamar Caudle were convicted of conspiring to defraud the government and faced sentencing and new trial motions.
Padua reports Giuseppe Capornello, 45, freed after twenty years of a thirty year term. President Gronchi granted clemency and Capornello departed the facility with $1,280 saved from shoemaking work in his cell.
Gov J Hugo Aronson asked Secretary Benson to designate three more counties and part of the Ft Belknap Reservation as disaster areas because of drought. The move brings to 14 the Montana counties seeking disaster area status to permit grazing livestock on soil bank land without forfeiting payments. Kruse explains designation does not supply new aid but allows grazing under the soil bank program with June 22 to Jan 1 production restrictions.

In West Glacier a black bear fought a 25 foot water hose at park headquarters. Mrs. Max Edgar watched as the bear pawed, chewed, and shook the hose, then retreated to eat before returning to inspect the hose after the water was shut off.
