Governor Elmer Holt invites President Roosevelt to Montana to witness the drought conditions described as the worst in state history. Holt plans to press for rapid water conservation development in the north central area and to double the drought relief employment quota to 3,000.
Free City of Danzig reports Nazi rulers will ignore League of Nations High Commissioner Sean Lester. Dr. Arthur Greiser asserts communications to the League will be dismissed and Lester will be socially ostracized. Lester returns from Geneva amid Nazi defiance of League relations.
Vienna reports a four-nation plan to dismember the Soviet Union by backing Ukraine’s independence. Germany leads the effort with Austria Yugoslavia and Hungary backing the move. The Czar's Courier urged White Russians to stay united until overthrow of the Soviet regime. Military occupation was warned as a price of liberty.
Postmaster General James A Farley will take a leave of absence from August 1 to after the presidential campaign. William W Howes, first assistant postmaster general, will serve as acting postmaster general in Farleys absence. Farley will receive no federal salary during the absence.
Extreme heat and a month long drought sweep the Rocky Mountains to Indiana. More than 50 deaths are counted with at least 10 linked to heat. drownings total about 15 as thousands seek relief in lakes and rivers. Des Plaines reaches 118 and Chicago 102. no relief expected for days. Wheat prices spike then drop on drought fears and selling.
President Roosevelt unveiled a drought relief program to provide incomes for 170000 distressed families, feed livestock, and reform the Dust Bowl economy. He will inspect progress next month while 2800 workers daily in South Dakota and others in North Dakota Minnesota and Montana tote out wells dams and roads.
LeRoy Burns a 14 year old patient at Murray hospital after being struck by lightning Monday afternoon at Holland field. Hundreds of friends called to inquire about his condition as nurses report his improvement though his left eye remains seriously burned. His mother and aunt read to him from books brought from home.
New Jersey Governor Harold G. Hoffman refused to extradite Ellis H. Parker Jr. of Burlington County to New York on kidnaping charges linked to Paul H. Wendel. Hoffman called Wendel and Murray Bleefeld affidavits false and defended Parker’s 42 years of service. Parker, 65, was indicted by a Brooklyn grand jury and held on $500 bail amid extradition proceedings.

Ruth Bryan Owen the United States first woman minister plenipotentiary becomes betrothed to Captain Borge Rohde, the Danish court groom. The ceremony may be in New York at the Long Island estate of her daughter Mrs Lehman. She plans to campaign for Roosevelt. marriage would not force resignation unless she chooses.
An Italian air general and nine aviators including Antonio Locatelli were killed in Ethiopia while on a penetration mission. Sources say it was an ambush but the ministry denies the reports awaiting an official statement from Premier Mussolini.
The fifty eighth annual convention of the Medical association of Montana begins in Billings on Wednesday. Prominent physicians from Montana and across the United States attend, with over 150 medical men expected. The Montana Public Health association and the Montana Academy of Ophthalmology held sessions the day prior, electing Dr. W. P. Smith as president and Dr. L. R. Packard as vice president.
In Lakewood New Jersey a Swedish cook baked a large cake with 97 candles for John D Rockefeller who turns 97 tomorrow. He will spend the day as usual at Golf Hour estate with staff, breakfast in bed, a nap, a ride if weather permits, and quiet reading. Rockefeller, born July 8 1839 in Richford New York, built Standard Oil becoming the nation's richest citizen. his present wealth and gifts to kin and causes remain private.
Unsettled weather over Butte yesterday brought short showers between sunny spells. Temperatures ranged from 46 to 82 degrees, with fair and warmer conditions forecast for today in Butte and surrounding areas.
President Roosevelt directed all department heads and independent agencies to allocate this year's appropriations so there would be a leftover. Acting Budget Director Daniel W. Bell was asked to keep next year's estimates below current levels. A future order would require reporting why the leftover should be spent.
Oklahoma City July 7 Rep Joseph Lee of Norman pulled steadily ahead in the Oklahoma Democratic senatorial nominating race as scattered returns came in tonight. Gomer Smith, Townsend Plan vice president, held a slight lead for the other run off post. Lee is a former University of Oklahoma public speaking professor and staunch New Deal supporter.
Ten forest fires blaze across a broad front threatening villages and mining properties in northern Ontario. Seven fires are in the Sudbury district and three near Geraldton, a mining community, where residents prepared to abandon the town as flames advance toward Geraldton and several mines.
The Agricultural Department projects smaller world wool supplies in 1936 37 with production and stocks down. Outside Russia and China output should match 1935 at 3 278 billion pounds, near the 1929 low. the top clip was 3 44 billion in 1932. Domestic wool supply and mill consumption are seen shrinking, prices likely steady if demand holds.
