Japan announces a sweeping redesign of naval ships after two disasters showed dangers of overloading small vessels. Destroyers will be larger and more stable, with higher crew comfort, delaying 26 new destroyers and raising costs.
United Press reports Hitler pins down opposition with force while mass support and armed power keep regime secure. Despite fear and quiet streets, dissent simmers. possible future opposition remains but no immediate danger. Foreign correspondents depart as crisis subsides.
Three men in a sealed gondola conducted a 10 hour life support test for a stratosphere balloon flight planned to rise 15 miles. Major Kepner, Captain Stevens, and Orvil Anderson aimed to simulate conditions of the high altitude hop starting from Moon light valley with radio contact to helpers. They spilled liquid air and oxygen to manage breathable air and used bags to absorb carbon dioxide as they tested the gondola atmosphere.
Custer county cattlemen in Miles City express resentment over Montana hay being shipped to drought areas in North and South Dakota via government agencies while local cattle lack feed. They fear federal loan policies and potential automatic controls on livestock production may drain Montana’s hay crop and push feed into state. Railroad lines reportedly carried large government-ordered hay shipments from Hardin Billings Livingston and central Montana to Dakota points.

In Nice France July 7 sailors from the battleship Arkansas rioted after a bar bill, injuring 20 Americans two seriously. Police say the sailors, paid off and celebrating, defied the bill with the line deduct it from the war debt sparking clashes with locals and the Riviera police.
Thomas Rowland’s packing company secured a state relief audit contract as John Carmody and Dr W J Butler arrived in Butte to oversee the Hansen Packing company deal. The firm will handle beef purchases from Montana stock under AAA drought relief, expanding work at the plant.
The Gaylord Reppy robbery and slaying remains unsolved as new arrest prospects emerged. Ray Hennigan, 25, was released on $1,000 bond after a federal liquor arraignment in Livingston, while Quinton Brownell, 29, faced similar charges and sought bonds. Police questioned both as they awaited further light on the case.
President Roosevelt toured St. Thomas Island in Virgin Islands where residents hailed him an economic savior during a drive across the island. He inspected rehabilitation projects after the U S S Houston arrived in St Thomas Harbor at 4 15 p m.

Myles J. Thomas a Democratic candidate for county attorney filed a $30,000 libel action against Lewis Penwell, Floyd Smith, and the Western Progressive Publishing Co. The complaint claims the July 6 issue accused Thomas of diverting county printing and paying outside printers for campaign cards.

Baltimore July 17 Judge Eugene O Dunne voided the marriage of Miss Virginia Classen Thompson to John Brenner declaring a woman may change her mind about marriage at any time. He called it a God given right and dismissed legal notions of male control over female choices.
Montana forecast calls for generally fair conditions Sunday and Monday. Warmer temperatures in the west with cooler readings in the far east portion on Sunday.
Butte enjoys its best tourist trade in years as Yellowstone Park arrivals surge. For the first three weeks after opening, West Yellowstone entrance cars rose 91 percent and Gardiner 87 percent. Willard S. Thompson of the Butte Chamber of Commerce notes a scenic drive from the park to Butte and many travelers heading to the coast pass through Butte.
