Postmaster General Bailar urges a dual rate system with a 16 cent business rate and a 13 cent citizen rate for individuals who handwrite both return and delivery addresses and include ZIP codes. He keeps Saturday delivery under serious consideration as a cost cut.
Dave Hinch and Rudy Ketcham defend their work as dogcatchers in Butte Silver Bow. They say threats and verbal abuse from residents accompany their job of seizing stray dogs and protecting children and pets. They work in six patrols outside Rocker Walkerville Melrose and Divide.
William J. Mietus faced seven counts of criminal defamation in Boulder County. Jefferson County Attorney Richard Llewellyn dismissed the charges citing insufficient evidence and potential constitutional issues. The case stemmed from paid ads during Mietus campaign for mayor.
Negotiations between Anaconda Co and union negotiators continued in Helena with no progress reported Wednesday. About 4,000 workers across Butte, Anaconda, and Great Falls remain idle as the Non-Ferrous Industry Conference presses for an industry-wide settlement. Magma Copper and Kennecott reached wage settlements, signaling possible deals for the remaining six producers later in the week.
Two studies with over 3,500 women across seven countries show smoking accelerates menopause. The more a woman smokes, the earlier menopause occurs, with light smokers between never and former smokers. At ages 48–49 heavy smokers are nearly twice as likely to be past menopause, and at 50–51 about 79 percent of heavy smokers are past menopause versus 56 percent of nonsmokers.
Oklahoma City authorities report two children aged six and one killed when their father's car was stolen, then set ablaze as an afterthought. Michael Creston Moore of Newcastle Ohio surrendered six hours later and faces two murder charges pending further investigation.

Coroner says Judy Hackman Cassidy a 27 year old hostess was found dead near a gully north of Butte with facial bruises and neck marks suggesting strangulation. Sheriff Hagel and Deputy Coroner Frank Johns said autopsy pending while detectives questioned dozens of people as they probe Monday night party links. The body lay about 200 yards from the Ryan Shaft area near McGlone Heights.
The council and County Executive Micone clash over who can appoint the Silver Bow General Hospital administrator. County Attorney McCarthy says the executive may appoint non elected department heads, while Commissioner Gustafson cites charter powers for the commissioners. A second reading on a fire response ordinance was set for July 20.
Hamill Manufacturing Co. in Imlay City Michigan will stop requiring workers to raise hands for permission to use the bathroom and will pay wages to those suspended for resisting the rule. The plant employs 400 people making seat belts for Ford and workers held a one day stoppage over grievances.
