Amid party maneuvering at the convention, Scranton aims to capitalise on Eisenhower ties and mobilise GOP voters while Goldwater holds a commanding delegate lead. Key figures include Richard Kleindienst, George Truax, Milton Eisenhower, and Nelson Rockefeller as contenders circle the vice presidency and unity efforts.
Gov. Tim Babcock signed a proclamation to place a legalized gambling initiative on the November ballot. Charles R. Lee of Butte, head of the Montana Association for Legalized Gambling, says the move will not affect his bid for governor. The Montana Independent Development Party backs Lee and plans a Helena convention. The initiative would bar new restrictions on gambling and repeal sections of state law. If approved, Lee aims to push repeal of the constitutional ban on lotteries in 1965.
Prominent civil rights leaders announced intensified desegregation campaigns across Alabama under the new civil rights act. MLK Jr said SCLC staff will assess conditions in Tuscaloosa and Selma. In Selma 55 Negroes and six whites jailed during a voter registration drive. A federal judge in Birmingham noted changed circumstances and allowed peaceful demonstrations in Tuscaloosa to proceed. Lester Maddox again refused entry to Negroes at his Atlanta restaurant. Delegates in Pittsburgh debated a strong anti discrimination statement at a Lutheran Church in America convention.
Leonard B. Webb a 39 year old man with a history of violence faced a second sanity hearing in district court Judge T E Downey ordered his return to the Ft Mackenzie Veterans Hospital in Sheridan Wyoming on doctors advice Webb who served as a staff sergeant in the Korean War was described as homicidal and threatening to harm himself and relatives Webb earlier resisted arrest grabbing a derringer from his waistband and pointing it at Officer John O Leary before being subdued and jailed the case followed by examinations at Warm Springs Montana and a Veterans Hospital in Wyoming and a renewed commitment for treatment was agreed on Monday
Partly cloudy with scattered showers or thundershowers expected today and Wednesday. Highs around 82, lows near 42. East of divide expect fair conditions with afternoon cloudiness and highs around 80 to 90 percent, lows 4 to 60. West of Divide regions forecast fair days with possible showers late Wednesday, highs 78 to 85, lows 40 to 50. The table notes 12 hour maxima and 18 hour minima ending 5 p.m. Monday.
Three men pictured in Butte on Monday included Newt Dunstan a veteran Butte miner and underground guide at the Kelley Mine while Forrest Kilmer executive editor and Fred C. Bills editor of the Times-Democrat Davenport Iowa were also in town. Kilmer and Bills were en route to a Lee Newspapers conference in Helena after visiting Yellowstone Park and before attending the National Republican Convention in San Francisco.
In the central highlands defense of Nam Dong, 300 government troops repelled waves of Viet Cong in a night attack. Casualties were heavy with two Americans killed and four wounded, plus an Australian adviser among the dead. Nurses under fire treated wounded and retrieved first aid kits as buildings burned from phosphorous shells.
Governor Tim Babcock proposed a state building program with no property tax increase funded by revenue bonds retired from a dedicated state revenue source. He suggested cigarette tax as one potential payer to finance new university classrooms and state agency buildings, with final project approvals by legislators.
State Controller Walter Anderson will stay on to direct flood recovery and federal aid distribution while pursuing the office of secretary of state. Gov. Tim Babcock rejected his resignation Monday but agreed to relieve him from state duties as soon as possible to focus on his campaign. Anderson, Republican nominee for secretary, submitted the resignation June 22, and the governor said he should not remain in state government during his campaign.
Four young men pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace after a July Fourth riot in West Yellowstone. The jail terms ranged from 14 days to six months for acts including blocking traffic, attacking a fire truck, and looting property. Community leaders worried publicity could hurt tourism.
In Salt Lake City Kennecott Copper Corp offered Mine-Mill a three year contract with wage gains of 18 to 25 cents an hour plus job security and higher night shift differentials. Union official Verne Curtis said talks would resume only on counterproposal terms and not on the Kennecott offer. About 7,500 Kennecott workers are idled after a strike by the United Steelworkers. Negotiations involve Utah Nevada Arizona and New Mexico operations amid steelworkers picket lines in Utah and Arizona.
The Board of Trustees took bids for fire insurance for School District 1 in Butte under advisement after Monday night’s admin building session. A low sanding bid of 858 from Knucky Construction Co and a 1145 painting bid from Nevin Painting Co were accepted. Gerald D Arcy hired as fourth engineer starting Aug. 1. A 200 bonus each approved for PE instructors Pamela House and Frances Harisson. Contract renewal for William Scully at Butte Junior High approved.
Sheriff Bill Dalling, president of Butte Celebrations Inc., called a morning meeting to consider action by the group regarding Sunday night’s fireworks display. Dalling apologized to Butte citizens and visitors for the hitches that occurred in the fire-
